The puritans wanted to have their own form of free government that god was "in control of." They had a strong belief that where you went after death was predetermined by god before you were even born. If you confessed to being a witch it was the only way you could essentially save your life even if you weren't a witch. The puritans believed that every negative thing that happened was a result of the devils work and that he was actively working to undermine god.
