-Today we learned about the 4 lenses of learning used by PennLit. We then participated in some activities that use teaching strategies that we may be able to use in our classroom related to literacy.
-I have been reading the book Ambitious Science Teaching. The BDA strategy relates directly to strategies suggested in this book. The Before is getting student ideas about a phenomenon. Then students learn more about the topic by experimenting and discussing. And finally they synthesize that with a model or final explanation. This correlates well to the literacy strategies.

We learned the best learning practices: meaning-centered, social lens, language based and human lens. I recognize that the language of math and coding will be very important as students make meaning of something that is new to almost all of them. I will have to be aware of prior knowledge (or lack of prior knowledge) and how I can help them connect their new knowledge. (Using BDA will help connect old and new knowledge.)

- Today, we discussed and analyzed the meaning-centered lens, the social lens, the language-based lens, and the human lens. We also discussed the Before-During-After reading strategy and completed a sample lesson using BDA.
- I learned more about these lenses and the BDA reading strategy.
- I can use the lenses to help enhance my lesson plans and ensure that I am meeting the needs of my students. I can use the BDA reading strategy with each new text to be more intentional about my learning objectives and helping students reach those goals. I also liked the "Share a Smile" activator that we did at the beginning of the class period and could use that during the first week of school.

Today we practiced the Jigsaw framework and the process of a BDA. I learned that both of these approaches are beneficial for students because they allow them to think critically and focus in on specifics. I plan to use the Jigsaw approach in my classroom when we are discussing a topic that has many different avenues. Students can be broken up into expert groups and then teach each other about their learning. I will use the BDA process in my classroom to allow students to practice making predictions and focus on vocabulary. As a 2nd grade teacher, it is important to teach my students to focus on the small details of the text in order to understand the big picture. I can begin this process simply with a read aloud to my class and slowly allow my students to practice this independently with their readings.

Today we discussed the importance of developing literacy and helping students see the importance of literacy. We discussed the four lenses of learning and applied them to how we see students learning best in our own classrooms. We learned about BDA lesson planning and saw a demonstration of that.

This session really made me consider how we can make literacy a positive and engaging experience for students, so that they are motivated to use those skills throughout their lives. The BDA format seems very useful for preparing students to engage with a text, and then framing their analysis after a reading. I'm curious about how that strategy could become more self-directed, so that students can use it to engage in readings (either for pleasure or for other academic purposes) that are not scaffolded or formatted in the same way.

Today we met our instructors and classmates! :) We also learned what we can expect from this course. Today we engaged and collaborated with our peers and instructors. Today was fun, active and engaging.

Today I learned about the four lenses that guide learning and will be focused on throughout the duration of this course.

How will I use what we did today: Today was an awesome reminder of how to go about lesson planning. Before, during, after... although this has become quite natural in my planning process the reminder to be intentional is always important. As an English teacher I can't wait to do something similar to the activity we did when we read "Birthday Party"

We were introduced to Penn Lit and what the course entails. We learned a little about the four lenses of learning and looked at how classroom practices for how our students learn best can fit into each lens. We also learned about the Before, During, After structure and were introduced how to incorporate this into a reading activity. I liked being able to look at this from a student lens and think about how a student would go through the activity. I would like to use what I learned by thinking about the 4 lenses of learning as I am planning lessons. I also would like to look at how to incorporate the Before/During/After format and incorporating that into my planning and activities.

I will also try to focus more on making sense of the readings I assign so the students stay engaged and find meaning in the assignments.
