Prompt: The epic poem, Beowulf, explores what it means to be part of an Anglo-Saxon community; characters demonstrate both the types of behavior that Anglo-Saxons value, as well as behaviors they were expected to avoid. According to the text, how is a member of an Anglo-Saxon community supposed to live? (i.e., what values should an Anglo-Saxon hold, and what behaviors demonstrate the belief in those values?)

Evidence:
1) “I had chosen to remain closer to his side” (275-276).
2) “No man swims in the sea as I can, no strength is a match for mine” (266-267).
3) “Fate saves the living when they drive away death by themselves!” (305-306)
4) “All of Beowulf’s band had jumped from their beds, ancestral swords raised and ready, determined to protect their prince if they could” (476-478).
5) “He who had come to them from across the sea, bold and strong minded, had driven affliction off” (506-508).
6) “He was hunting another dead monster, and took his weapon with him for final revenge against Grendel’s vicious attacks” (651-652).
7) “Remained, stood there, miserable, remembering, as a good man must, what kingship should mean” (750-751).
8) “But fate let me find its heart with ny sword, hack myself free” (289-290).

Brainstorm:
-Loyalty to one’s leader must be taken until death.
-Those who remain loyal to their leader shall be rewarded in the end.
-If one uses their strength in battle fate will in return them by saving their life.
-Through the strong emphasis of perseverance and vengeance Beowulf conveys that those who fight for the safety of other will be rewarded in life.
