Watch the informational video and read the documents (below on the board and also shared in Captain's Log). Afterwards, teachers should post a reflection on the difference between an ELEOT observation and other observation instruments, citing key differences.

ELEOT is a learner-centered classroom observation tool comprised of 30 items organized in seven environments aligned with the AdvancED Standards and Indicators and based on the most current research on effective learning. ELEOT was developed by an internal and external group of educators who examined research related to effective classrooms as well as different measures of effective teacher practices.
To me, a lot of the components seem to be the same as our current observation tool, but ELEOT is more student centered and focuses more on what the students are doing during the observation as opposed to the teacher. The observer has more detailed items that they are looking for within the 20+ minute observation. Also, ELEOT provides a picture of classrooms across an entire school but can also be used with a grade level, in content-specific ways, longitudinally for a specific classroom, or in other ways depending on the needs of the user. To me, this seems to be a more effective and comprehensive measure for our schools than our current measurement tool.

ELEOT is student centered...student engagement...when administrators (or other stack-holders) walk in to complete an ELEOT walkthrough they are looking at what the students are doing, how they are interacting with each other, how engaged are they, and how are they engaged (technology). ELEOT gives an over all picture of the classroom and school level of student engagement. Other observations, such as TKES, has the majority of focus on the teacher, and how the teacher is planning, teaching, and assessing.

ELEOT is a school improvement resources that provides data that will guide teachers towards creating the most optimal learning environment for our students. It measures the learners engagement in activities in the classroom and ways the learner demonstrates their knowledge of the content being taught. This tool differs from other observation tools because it is heavily student centered rather than teacher centered. The reliability and validity of this classroom tool across subject areas and grade levels school wide.

The 7 environments include Equitable Learning, High Expectations, Supportive Learning Environment, Active Learning Environment, Progress Monitoring and Feedback, Well Managed Environment and Digital Learning Environment. It is based on Marzano's research as well as Danielson's and the CLASS tools. ELEOT has a .94 reliability and is considered reliable, valid and structured. It provides observable evidence of environments that are conducive to learning. Ratings range from a 4 which is very evident to 1 which is not observed. I am attaching a short article I found that gives additional information.

Eleot is a tool used to determine whether or not a classroom and/or school environment allows for optimal learning to occur. Instead of focusing on evaluating what the teacher is doing, it looks over the high expectations set by the teacher and whether or not students have bought-in to those expectations. This evaluation method delves into student engagement, understanding, and practice of learning strategies which encourage independent growth and goal attainment. In this model, we're creating an environment where students are encouraged to reach for goals that are challenging, but not out of reach. Student differences are celebrated and collaboration is encouraged.

How are mistakes handled? Are differences accepted? Do students work together collaboratively? Are goals being set? To me, these are the more important questions. Does this mean that teachers don’t have to have content knowledge, plan/prepare lessons for students, assess student learning, or communicate with stakeholders? Of course not…a teacher’s work is never done.

There are seven areas that are observed. I like that ELEOT gives structured and quantifiable data to inform on the extent of student learning and engagement in tasks/activities. TKES focuses on the teachers and thier effectiveness in the classroom making sure that effective learning is going on in the classroom.

I feel that there are some similarities in the two observation tools as well because of the components that are being observed.

However, ELEOT strictly focuses on students and on that which can be observed in the classroom during a 20 minute visit by a trained evaluator.

This includes the expectations and support students encounter while leasrning. This provides a little more visage for the observer as to avoid a static view of the classroom solely through teacher observation.
Eleot is a student centered evaluation tool that focuses on 7 different student environments. These environments focus heavily on how the environment of the classroom can be changed to benefit the student. That is not to say that TKES did not benefit the student, but this tool puts the student at the forefront of the discussion. In this way of evaluating, we are first considering the type of environment we want in our classroom before deciding how to accomplish that task whereas before we were considering what kind of teacher we wanted.

Lyndsey Hamby
ELEOT is completely student-centered and focuses on student engagement rather than other observation tools, which may focus more on the teacher than the students. It takes several key things into account including how well the classroom environment is managed, how supportive the environment is and how comfortable students are with taking risks, how rigorous the material is and how equal the opportunities are, how engaged the students are in the lesson, if students are given feedback and allowed the chance to revise work based on that feedback, and how students can access to a digital learning environment. Tools such as TKES are great for looking at teacher professionalism and communication, and for measuring the teacher's effectiveness in the classroom. ELEOT is great because it focuses on the students and their engagement with structured and quantifiable data.
