The extension of slavery in new territories emerged when the nation expanded westward. Multiple compromises helped settle the issue at first. The "popular sovereignty" system was applied to other territories, which allowed people living in those territories to decide for themselves whether they wanted to keep slavery or not. The Fugitive Slave Act was also included, which was a more strict fugitive slave law. The Fugitive Slave Act was abhorred in the North.

The Kansas-Nebraska Act said that popular sovereignty would be applied to determine slavery in remaining territories. This caused "Bleeding Kansas", where anti-slavery and pro-slavery settlers fought violently with each other. A fight also happened on the floor of the Senate where an anti-slavery senator was beat over the head with a cane by a South Carolina senator.

Abraham only felt that slavery couldn't expand to new territories. The Democrats were split over slavery. South Carolina
issued its “Declaration of the Causes of Secession”, this represented South Carolina's need to secede from the United States.
