Setting emphasis on collaboration, communication, creativity and critical thinking is indispensable to prepare students for life and work environments in the 21st century

To create good Collaboration Skills, students need to work effectively and responsibly with distinctive groups of people, accept and share other students’ ideas to attain a mutual purpose. As a teacher I can ask propose a task, having in mind a Content, or even ask students to suggest one. That can be done using a motivational video, a quote, an image….Once the task is instituted / started students must be able to share their thoughts, findings, …within the group. It can be done as a class or in small groups, allocating different projects.

After researching and discussing, students need to communicate their results. In order to do this, they have to be able to use digital media as a way of sharing information efficiently (using diverse media and formats will help enhance the message), expressing views and articulating opinions.

Teachers shouldn’t forget the importance of creativity, which means the capacity to create new /unique ideas. Techniques like brainstorming, analyzing and/or evaluating images, texts, videos…. can help students to make creative works. Critical thinking must also be considered. It embraces logical thinking and analysis involving skills such as comparison, classification, sequencing, cause/effect, analogies, ……As an English teacher I try to do a bit of all in each class :)

All the time I've heard in the past about CLIL activities I always thought that being a teacher of English as a Second Language I wouldn't fit under this "label". Now, I have realised that the past few years I've always been a CLIL teacher because my classes focus on a theme: the environment, healthy living styles, the world of work and so on. Throughout the activities I prepare for developing these themes there is also time to correct language accuracy, but that goes according to what students need to master their communication in an effective way. This might mean that if my final goal is that students create a promotional video about fitness activities, they will have to know how to use the future tense. My goal is not to teach the future tense, but I may have to teach it (should I find it necessary) to help them to better accomplish the final task. So, yes, maybe the idea is to have students making a research about outdoor activities, their benefit to their bodies, how people can create impact on nature by practising sports outdoors and the final goal would be for them to make a promotional video of outdoor sports practice in their hometown - Lagos.

CLIL stands for content and language integrated learning. It consists in teaching a subject through the medium of a language other than the school language. In CLIL classes learners gain knowledge of the subject while simultaneously using and learning the foreign language. It is important to notice that CONTENT is the first word in CLIL. However, CLIL subject teachers also need to help learners with language, make learners notice it and then use it. I enjoy them

As D. Doyle proposes, working CLIL from content that we like has to be fantastic, but in my case, I have to adhere to the established curriculum and teach both the topics that we like the most, and those that we like the least. An activity that students like very much in the Natural Sciences area (in English) is to develop a food pyramid in English, in this way, while they learn vocabulary and use structures, they also learn the contents of the Natural Sciences area.

CLIL approach can be useful to teach Geografy and History.
In the first case, the teacher can choose a particular topic (ex: volcanoes, Earth in space, earthquakes, demography...) and set a learning unit in which materials are provided in the choosen language. It would be great to organize a presentation (such the american ones) where differents groups of students prepare something to show to others.
In the second case I think it would be good to create a "master" lesson to be used to introduce each new topic. For example, we have to speak about the Renaissance in Italy? The first lesson will be set in english, and it will concern key words, key characters, the timeline. And so on for the lessons about Columbus voyage to America, and so on for all the others.
I think it's very important to be organised teachers and to work in a professional way, to avoid confusion and random activities, without any accurate definition in terms of learning.

Students will work together in teams to solve whatever question is being asked, where each team will have English and non-English speakers to help students learn each others' languages while making use of technology to translate each interaction. Each team would be encouraged to do their best to not solely rely on translation if their language passport shows they have learned a sufficient amount of words and phrases to have basic developmentally-appropriate conversations. The words and phrases they have learned from each other during the activity and lesson can be added to their language passport for further documentation of their linguistically-diverse development.

—Austin Nicholas Dragoș [United States of America]

This is something I would also try once more.

The secret is always encourage them to experiment and present the scientific principle being taught. The idea is to have children learn science by discovery, so they can enjoy it more.

Students can identify spiders and their webs and become more observant of details, such as what they eat and how they trap their food. To make it more engaging, they will cut out pictures of the kinds of insects spiders capture in their webs, and glue them exactly there. This allows for lots of thinking, speaking and doing… a must for an engaging process!

My Technologies CLIL lessons are always very practical. Most of them are based on Problem/project Based Learning. Through this methodology they are asked to work to solve a contextualized problem or project. This way, they put into practice their creativity, they need to have initiative to come up with possible solutions and to develop them, and they feel that their work is useful, as they have to present it to the class at the end, as if they were workers of some enterprise and present their results to their clients. Usually, these PBL's end in the workshop, where the students use the tools and materials to build up the technological solution that they have designed. It is very motivating for them.

We learnt the things necessary for our work in the target language. We developed both our language and teaching skills. After watching Dr. Coyle's videos, I realized that some lessons I have taught was built up in CLIL without knowing the CLIL lessons' structure. I really like reading about space, physics, the birth of the universe, solar system, space research, black holes etc. Discovering the vocabulary and explantions about these topics and creating texts about it, watching videos together and discussing about the origin and the future of living things. These all are about a CLIL lesson. It's good to realize my teaching style is actually close to CLIL.

My CLIL proposal would include teachers from literature and history. I would propose the topic Shakespeare, I would ask the Literature subject to review the 16th century in Spain, the current was being developed at that time, the most important authors of the period. To the History teacher, I would ask them to prepare the students about the socio-economic context of this period. Finally, in English we would review a little bit of history and literature focusing our attention in Shakespeare.
