Mariani Padlet Week 6 LAI 649

What do you believe that students need to learn:

It might be a little cliche, but I fully believe that in order for students to have the capacity to learn effectively, all of Maslow’s needs have to be fulfilled. Without having a sense of safety, protection and/or belonging, the student's mind will be too focused on how to get those needs met, and quickly. If a student is worried about when the next time they may eat will be or if they will be safe tonight, it will be nearly impossible for learning to take place based on the preoccupation of their hierarchy of needs being met. #maslowbeforebloom

If we are considering factors that are inside the classroom that contribute to an effective learning situation, I would say based upon my experiences that having a good relationship with the teacher and/or having a safe place within the school is paramount to internalizing the material.

In my experience, I have also found that students tend to learn more effectively and naturally if they have some type of choice or ownership over their learning, whether it be having a choice in how they demonstrate learning or in having a say as to what is covered in the curriculum, if possible.

Much of Maslow's theory is what I typically think of for answering this question; however, I think students also need to avoid homeostatic states in order to learn best. I think a rich learning environment will create a nice balance between having safety and belonging needs met, while also creating some aspect of learning stimuli that pushes students to adapt somewhat. This is why I believe scaffolding is so important. I also think basic physiological needs must be met, but many of these are beyond our control (thinking of lack of sleep and children who are hungry waiting for a 7th period lunch).

Additionally, I think a level of trust is needed for students to feel they can make mistakes without terrible consequences. I often hear of students cheating on assignments that they feel they can't risk a bad grade on, which obviously is not ideal for learning. (I think I would really do away with grades if I had the power!)
