Revealing Dialogue - COA Flex 4th by Christine Bagnall

Look through the chapters you have read in your novel so far. Choose a piece of DIALOGUE (a conversation between two or more people) that you feel reveals something important about your character's personality. Post the conversation (with page #) and explain what you learn/infer about the character based on this conversation.

In the story "Where the Wild Things Are" by Maurice Sendak, the wild things cry "Oh please don't go - we'll eat you up - we love you so!" And Max replies "No!" (pg. 20)

This piece of dialogue shows me a lot about the wild things AND Max. I learn that the happiness of the wild things is very dependent on Max and they are in need of a leader and a caretaker. I learn that their way of having fun is only temporary and does not bring them meaning that lasts. I learn that Max has come to realize what is really important to him - his family.

(Page 26).

This shows me that Brian isn't hard working or even tries. Dj can do a bunch of hard work without water and can throw a hay bale by herself. Brian doesn't put his mind to something and could care less. What will happen to him if he quits is he can't be on the football team. Eventually I predict that Brian will help you again and change, but it will take some time.

This dialogue shows the real character of Brian and the role he plays in the book. This shows that he gives up fairly easily and isn't willing to put effort into something he doesn't enjoy. This is an example of Brian's outlook on life and that he probably doesn't put his mind to something if he doesn't have interest in it. Later on in the book my guess would be that Brian would hopefully change in order to keep his spot on the football team.

He ends up saying something to her, which makes her "hard to get" game go away. Hannah seemed to be excited that Justin actually said something to her at first.

"Who cares?" I told her. "It doesn't mean anything."
"Hannah," she said, "I don't care that he picked you over me." I knew exactly where that conversation was headed and I was not going to let her take us down there. "He did not choose me over you, Jessica," I said.

This quote and dialogue shows that Hannah, at that time. did care about the rumors as long as they were about her. She didn't seem to care about the fact that her "friend" could have possibly been humiliated. Hannah did care, a little bit. She didn't wanna have that conversation with Jessica for even though they acted like friends they really weren't. This shows that even though Hannah didn't like the way her life turned out to be, that Hannah didn't want the rumors to be flying so fast through the school. She moved to be done with rumors and to start something new, but ended up feeling disappointed, because everything she does causes a rumor she doesn't wanna be a part of. This dialogue also shows that Hannah was not okay with the situation and that she'd rather just be in her own independent world that have a friend who gets jealous because a group of guys decided Hannah had a bigger but, and looked "hotter" than Jessica did when Jessica was confident in herself. DJ is gonna be a success in life because with the hard work she has can help her get through anything that life tosses her way. While Brian doesn't know how to work hard and life will Ben brutal for him. To me this quote really shows you the difference between two people. There's that one kid that work and his butt off to do the best he/she can. While the other kid doesn't have to try or work hard and still doesn't well. The ability to work hard and not give up is a huge part of life that is important to have. DJ's got it.
