I went to a very large public school, and dealt with a lot of diversity. I feel very lucky that I was able to experience different cultures and beliefs. I was able to learn about different religions and cultures from a very young age. My mom is a teacher, and I spend a lot of time volunteering in her classroom. I am able to experience the different backgrounds students come with and how that affects their education. I agree that diversity is much more than just race and ethnicity. It encompasses what makes you, you.

I grew up with a lot of diversity. Growing up in Southern California there were a lot of, as previously mentioned, different ethnicity, religious beliefs, varying genders. However, I think diversity goes even further into different learning abilities, different political beliefs, differing backgrounds, etc. All of these pieces effect a person, in different ways, and I witnessed a decent amount of them growing up.

One day we had one colored student show up that sent many shock waves throughout the school and community at large. If the educators of the time had some sort of training, I think that would have gone a long way in helping that student fit in.

Diversity is an all encompassing term that covers race, ethnicity, social aspects, socioeconomic status, gender, sexuality, and many others. It is up to us as teachers to try to keep these things in mind as we teach and to work to be as inclusive as possible to all these different groups.

What different diversity exists and how best to approach that diversity in a respectable way. I also have learned that many ways that I approach diversity isn't quite enough. I tend to be more of a treating people as just people and not going beyond that. Being inclusive means moving beyond just treating everyone the same, and instead to understand how best to make the field as equal as possible by considering everyone and getting to know them individually.

Diversity can sometimes have a plethora of negative connotations attached to it because of all the negative things in the our history that were formed on the foundation of diversity. For example the holocaust and the Jim Crow laws were both horrible things that happened and were both founded on diversity. But diversity has positive aspects to it as well because it makes us who we are. Our backgrounds, heritages, religions, traditions, etc., all makes us incredibly unique which means we all have something that only we can bring to the table in this world.

From working in the Moscow school district last year, I saw teachers utilize some incredible strategies to promote inclusion to the student body. One of these was a student group project where students would be randomly grouped and given a country to research for a month. They would study questions from population and languages spoken, to religious affiliations and government traditions. At the end of this month, each group goes before the school to present what they have discovered. The students do this dressed in the traditional clothes and holding probs that would represent their given country. The project shows each heritage and back ground is happily welcomed because of how well they are represented and respected with each presentation. What I want to know is how to incorporate more things like this in just your average classroom setting.

There's a difference?! I didn't know that before. Race is usually talking about the biological, "outside" things you can see about a different person, such as someone being an African American, or Caucasian.
Ethnicity, however, dives much more into the heritage of a person, their culture, and where they grew up.

Coming from a small rural town in Idaho, I didn't get to experience much diversity in race, religion, or culture first hand. I also however did not have the chance to learn about it in school other than the very little mandatory material. I think that this has put me behind in a way because now as an adult I am having to do more research when I could've been exposed to it as a child. I think that teachers have a huge impact with helping teach new things like diversity. How one talks about certain thing impacts how a student is going to learn and therefore think about that matter. It is important for teachers to teach diversity, but also to not be biased when teaching to avoid their students feeling one specific way about something. -Caitlin Schappert

I feel like Diversity is always present in a majority of things we do throughout our life. I have even experienced it coming from a smaller city when I moved schools. The school I moved to had a population of 80% Mormons which is a religion I do not practice. It was hard to try and connect with my peers for a little while and showed me different ways to overcome differences in each other. I know that some people don't know how to and so I think that it is important for every individual to learn to not be biased with peoples choices and how they identify themselves.

Learning can be done most effectively when there is better student to teacher connection. If both are able to interact better with each other the better students will like going to class and more effectively the student will want to learn. Showing passion in teaching and also passion with caring for all your students goes a long way in the classroom.
