I think what makes for a strong visual presentation is lots of good images or videos to supplement the information. Also, bold words or big text that seem easier to read and broken up into shorter chunks. I think having a lot of small text and little imagery makes it a more weak presentation. I currently have my students do a google slides presentation and one of the challenges is having them organize their information to present easily off of their slides. - Lindsay Fitting

In my classroom, I use google slides presentations with my students to extend their learning and bring a fun activity into the process. The slides are usually very guided at this time of the year and I have them work with a partner to complete the task. The biggest challenge is the amount of time that it takes my students to complete a presentation and then allowing time for each group to present. Often, I will have the students present to a small group. Another challenge is that my students do not have a lot of knowledge about creating their own presentations, so almost all of the presentations look similar.
Sara Wilson

When students are asked to present, we typically use Google Slides. It usually comes at the end of unit or lesson series on a topic to summarize their learning. I also have had students use slides for project presentations, such as biographies or and ecosystem project. There have been many challenges...sometimes they get too "fancy" with the font and animations and images, so I often need to put limits on these, although I don't like to stifle their individuality. They might have too little text on the screen, which is a problem when presenting because they don't know what to say, or too much text and it's overwhelming to the viewer.
Rebecca Henig

I typically use Google Slides as a presentation tool in my classroom. My students are currently working on an explorer report using Slides, but have also created a math review presentation to prepare for our first unit test. The biggest challenge I have faced is getting students to do more than simply read from their slides. Even setting limitations on the amount they write hasn't worked well for me as most of the students end up just reading the smaller amount of text rather than elaborating.
-Joe McCormick

For my higher level students, I uses Google Slides as a way for them to better understand the material. For instance, I may give them a link to a website or article or section that they are to read as a group, make sense of the information (with help from me, if needed) and present it to the class. I have found that, despite clearly articulating the criteria on the rubric, students have a very difficult time making the presentation limited to simply words, phrases and images as opposed to full sentences; not to mention that these presentations tend to be very boring and basic, most likely due to their limited skills.

One tool I would like to have my students start using is google drawings. Some of the challenges I am seeing my students have are not having the knowledge to navigate through the technology to be able to effectively show what they know. Only a select amount of my students feel comfortable navigating through google slides and adding features that will enhance their presentation. Also, they want to put a lot of text on the slide so they know what to talk about, which leads to them just reading off the slides not engaging the audience.

Heather Serven

One example is "Star of the Week" during which they share photographs and information all about themselves. To help with the content, they are given sentence frames. They are often nervous in front of their peers. They also do a presentation about "Earth's Place in Space" and I think Google Slides might be a great resource for them. Perhaps developing the presentation by collaborating with our big buddies (4th graders) would empower students to integrate the content they want to share while not feeling overwhelmed with the technology.

In my second grade classroom, students are required to use the site Kid Rex with a partner to complete a biography project about a person who has made a positive difference in the world. Students have, in the past, created a visual collage of pictures, quotes, inventions, etc. regarding their person of interest. I think Google Slides would be an excellent multimedia transition instead of creating the poster.
During the process, students struggle with navigating between different articles and visuals online. I have used graphic organizers with headings in order to help students understand what is expected of them in their online research. In addition, students struggle with the organizational aspect of presenting. They don't always know what to say and in what order. Google Slides would help with this and students could place the slides in the order of the presentation beforehand. In addition, for my English Language Learners, the presentation itself can be daunting for them. I try to buddy present in these cases as well as provide sentence frames so they have access to the language involved in the presentation. -Jolene Vermillion

We've used it for Mission Projects, biographies, regions of California, and natural disaster presentations. I've also had students use traditional posters, but find that they are more engaged when they are using technology. The main struggle I see is that students get caught up in the fun animations, transitions, and formatting of their presentations...rather than the content! - Susan Smith

Currently, in my music class, we watch videos regularly from Quaver Music that provide outstanding auditory and visual learning opportunities that directly align with the curriculum. I am looking to add slides shows and 'how to play' music videos to my classroom. Setting up the classroom where they can see the videos and keeping them from talking or being distracted by other things is always necessary, however, they definitely respond highly to this multimedia format. With this said, I have yet to introduce slide shows specifically and will use the information provided in this class to begin implementing new approaches.
