We've learned a variety of strategies and properties for multiplication and they have to know which ones for when.

In my class I do #1 by using the Close reading. Students read math story 3 times and each time they focus on a different part of the problem.

We model how we make numbers with 10 and 20 frames, number collections, math mats. We look for patterns during calendar, when we enter breakfast and lunch numbers, and lots of other times throughout the day. We attend to precision when logging the weather. We choose the appropriate tools during centers and math lessons.

Currently, we are doing Mathematical Practice # 1: We are learning to persevere in solving a problem especially as we are learning the concept of "more" and "fewer".

Practice #5: Use appropriate tools strategically. We use counters, unifix cubes, white boards, ten frames, hundreds charts, etc.

We are using all of them as students are encouraged to keep going #1 when they get stuck. They also use reasoning to make sense of it and bounce back to the question. Students are able to talk and explain their strategies in partners and with their group. We use white boards, manipulatives, and the screen to show strategies and student thinking. They are also encouraged to check their work and to look for patterns and make connections within those patterns.

I incorporate MP #1 especially when we solve word problems. We dissect the problem: who is/are the characters, what do we know about them, etc.
