Adab in seeking knowledge

Adab is an important aspect especially in seeking knowledge. It teaches us that is important to have a good character when seeking knowledge. For example, Jibril once came to the Prophet ﷺ in a clean white robe. This shows that appearance alone is important as it also reflects adab. This is why Islam emphasizes respect for teachers, adab comes before knowledge. Knowledge without adab is useless and could strip away the barakah, but knowledge with proper adab will lead the otherwise. For students, this shows that how we act in the classroom, the way we speak, and the way we show ourselves are just as important as the things that we learn in class. Adab ensures that one become a respectable man even with a low amount of knowledge.

The five pillars of islam

The five pillars are the things that needs to be done to complete the faith of one muslim. Each pillar has its meanings and reason behind them. The shahada is the first pillar of Islam and the most important one, a declaration of being a muslim. Salah is the second pillar, it is a way for us to pray to Allah for five times a day. Zakat is the third pillar of islam, this is to make sure the economy is always stable as it keeps the rich from getting richer and the poor from getting poorer. Fasting in Ramadan is the forth pillar, it teaches patience and also how the poor feels to not have food. Not only that, it is also great to relax and heal the body. Finally, Hajj is the fifth pillar of islam and it works as a way to unite all the Muslims across the world. All of this pillars comes together as the pillars of islam as a way of life as a muslim, connecting us to Allah while building a just and united society.

The pillars of iman deal with the foundation of faith itself. Believing in Allah is the core of Islam, affirming that He is One, independent, and without partners. Belief in the angels reminds us of the things that we cant see and that everything we do is written down in details. Believing the Qur’an gives us a guide for life that is filled with wisdom and truth. Believing in the prophets connects us to the history of revelation, showing us that every prophet brought the same message of worshipping Allah alone. Together, these pillars strengthen our understanding of tawhid (oneness of Allah) and give us clear direction in life. They remind us that our faith is the truth and has been taught through the prophets and books of revelations.

The last two pillars of iman talks about day of judgement and qada' and qadar. Belief in the Day of Judgment makes us conscious that every action, no matter how small, will be weighted on the scale. It pushes us to live responsibly, knowing that our deeds will determine our final destination which is heaven or hell. Belief in qada’ and qadr teaches us that everything happens by Allah’s will and wisdom. It reminds us to be patient in hardship and grateful in ease. While we must put in effort, we also accept that the outcome is always in Allah’s hands. Together, these pillars train us to balance effort with reliance, hope with fear and planning with trust in Allah. This would remind us that everything happens with reasons and we shall be accountable for our actions.

Ihsan is the highest level of faith, where worship and character are perfected. It means to worship Allah as if we see Him, even though we do not, because we know He sees us. Ihsan makes us sincere in our prayers, honest in our work, and kind in our actions. It extends to every part of life from being dutiful to parents to showing mercy even in times of war. Islam teaches that even small acts, like slaughtering an animal, should be done with goodness and kindness. Ihsan transforms ordinary actions into acts of worship and turns a believer into a source of goodness for others. It is the ultimate goal of faith, making us live with sincerity and excellence in everything we do.

When we look at adab, the five pillars of Islam, the six pillars of iman, and ihsan together, we see a complete system for life. Adab prepares the heart for knowledge, the pillars of Islam shape our practice, iman strengthens our belief, and ihsan perfects our character. Each part connects with the other, guiding us to live with balance, devotion, and greatness. Islam is not like the other religions as it is a full way of life that shapes the body, mind, and soul. By following this system, a Muslim becomes someone who lives with purpose, benefits society, and ultimately gains closeness to Allah SWT.

The acquisition of Hikmah, or wisdom, is a transformative journey that blends intellectual discernment with spiritual devotion, allowing a person to perceive the true nature of reality and act upon it. Historically characterized as a synthesis of intellect, knowledge, and the fear of God, Hikmah effectively serves as a bridge between understanding and practical deeds. This journey is rooted in Ibadah (worship) and supported by three pillars which is Niyyah (Intention), which ensures actions are for Allah alone; Amal (Action), the consistent practice of good deeds and Ehsan (Excellence), the pinnacle of worship where one acts with the constant awareness of God's presence. Ultimately, Hikmah empowers individuals to internalize moral excellence and higher-order thinking, transforming their character through a deeper understanding of faith.

The acquisition of Hikmah through Ibadah is rooted in the transformative effects that religious obligations have on a believer's character. Each act of worship serves as a distinct source of wisdom. For example, Salah acts as a moral guard that helps one distinguish between right and wrong by prohibiting immorality. Fasting is decreed to help one attain Taqwa, providing the self-discipline and insight needed for a God-conscious life. Meanwhile, Zakah purifies the soul and wealth, and Hajj demands high self-control, reinforcing the idea that the best provision is the fear of Allah. Together, these rituals refine the spirit and intellect, serving as essential foundations for practical wisdom.

Preparation for Salah and Achieving Khushu'

To perform a valid prayer, one must meet obligatory conditions such as being a Muslim of sound mind, ensuring ritual purity through Wuduk or Tayammum, covering the 'awrah, and facing the Qiblah. The prayer itself is built upon 13 essential pillars, or Rukun, which must be performed in a specific sequence from the initial intention to the final salutation. Beyond these requirements, observing Sunnah acts like reciting the Iftitah prayer or focusing on the place of prostration enhances the spiritual quality of the worship, while avoiding invalidating actions like speaking or excessive movement.

A central objective of this preparation is achieving Khushu', a state of deep humility and focus where the believer is conscious of communicating with Allah. While not a mandatory pillar, Khushu' is a highly encouraged Sunnah that can be cultivated by preparing early, ensuring personal hygiene, and performing Wuduk perfectly. By understanding the meaning of the recitations and minimizing worldly distractions, a believer can achieve the calmness and concentration necessary for a meaningful connection during prayer.

The development of Islamic character (Akhlaq) through Salah with Khushu is rooted in the transformative power of mindful prayer on a believer’s heart. Beyond physical movement, a prayer performed with presence of mind serves as a moral safeguard, fostering the modesty and self-restraint (Iffah) necessary to avoid shameful and unjust deeds. This consistent practice of submission trains the believer in discipline and sincere obedience to Allah’s commands.

Furthermore, the internal dimensions of Khushu refine the spirit by building the strength to overcome laziness and distractions. The practice of self-reflection (Muhasabah) during prayer allows for a vital check on one’s actions and shortcomings, while the act of Sujud (prostration) instills deep humility (Tawaddu) by removing pride. Collectively, these virtues ensure that Salah is lived rather than just performed, effectively transforming an individual’s daily behavior and heart.

Fasting is a prescribed obligation for believers, intended to foster Taqwa, or God-consciousness, by following the example of nations that came before. This mindfulness is described as being as cautious as someone walking through a path of thorns to avoid harm. However, the physical act of abstaining from food and drink is meaningless if one does not also abandon lying and false conduct.

Beyond basic self-restraint, fasting builds patience (Sabr) in obedience and trials while instilling empathy (Rahmah) for the less fortunate. According to Al-Ghazali, the practice reaches its peak when a person moves beyond physical and behavioral discipline to refine the heart from worldly distractions. This spiritual growth is furthered by acts of charity, such as feeding others to break their fast, which carries a reward equal to the fast itself.

Ultimately, Hikmah is the fruit of a life where intellect and devotion meet. It transforms worship from a series of physical rituals into a profound spiritual education. By practicing Salah with Khushu’ and Fasting with Taqwa, a believer does more than fulfill an obligation and refine their character and purify their heart.

This journey proves that true wisdom is found in the balance of Niyyah (intention) and Amal (action). When faith is practiced with excellence, it shifts from a set of rules into a lived reality, empowering the individual to navigate the world with moral clarity, humility, and a deep, constant awareness of the Divine.
