Core Belief

One core belief of students is that we, as adults, are not able to see their true potential to achieve success through grades and test scores. Students should have the opportunity to show success in their own terms. Some students may not have great test taking skills. For example, a student may be failing some classes but open a successful business after graduation. School counselors should be able to provide support for all students whether they are passing their classes or not.

As an advocate for all students, a school counselor’s role is to stick by their student and provide resources for success after graduation.

Reflection on School Counselor Competency

I scored myself highly in the Mindsets section. All of the beliefs under this section describes the reason why I want to be a school counselor. For M1 through M4, I strongly agree with these statements because I view school counselors as a support system to all students. For example, a first generation student is less likely to know how to apply to college and FAFSA compared to someone that is not a first generation student. First generation students will seek guidance from a school counselor for college and FAFSA applications. M5 thorugh M7 shows that school counselors are the backbone of the school system.

I would need to improve on the section about direct and indirect services under the behavior section. I have always thought that school counselors only work with students. Under direct and indirect services, school counselors work with other people within the school system. I plan on improving this area through networking. Also, I want to work effectively with other people from the school system to better support students in their academic careers.

Bryan, J., Kim, J., & Liu, C. (2022). School counseling college‐going culture: Counselors’ influence on students’ college‐going decisions. Journal of Counseling & Development, 100(1), 39–55. https://doi.org/10.1002/jcad.12408

I was not surprised with the article. Many students reach out to their school counselors for guidance on their future after high school graduation. School counselors have a positive impact on many students' lives. In this article, it has shown that school counselors can help influence a student's path of life after graduation.
