Following the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the United States use Atomic Bombs to basically destroy Japan. This was the first ever use of nuclear weaponry in warfare and it was very deadly. It made other nations realize how much power these bombs held, and put a sense of fear in people who felt threatened of these. The US were the only people who had access to this technology, and people were very fearful towards them.

British Prime Minister Winston Churchill comes to the home town of US president Harry Truman to deliver a speech. Churchill warned against the Soviet union stating that an "Iron Curtain" is seperating the two. This was because the soviets had communist ideologies which were opposed to the capitalist views of the other nations. This is said to have started the cold War since it builds animosity between the United States and the USSR due to tensions over the spread of communism. It also started the Containment policy used by the United States to contain communism and stop its spread.

Russian forces cut off all of west Berlin's supply of food and other goods and cut off their means of transportation. Since the city was blockaded, the Western allies of Britain and the US airlifted food and other items into the blockaded region. This made the Communist forces look bad since they were blockading a city and the American forces were coming to the rescue by flying in food and supplies.

This was to unify a strength against a potential Soviet invasion of Europe, and once again make the Americans seem like the good guys. NATO's purpose is to guarantee the freedom and security of its members through political and military means, which promotes the likeness of capitalism and that communism could not provide this equality. With this alliance, anti-communist forces felt more secure and strong when battling the spread of communism.

However, a US spy plane picked up signs of the explosion, and further investigated and reported it back to the president. He later announced that the Soviets had discovered the technologies of the Atomic Bomb, and it was discovered that a person who helped build US atomic bombs had leaked the secrets to the Soviets. This caused American citizens to fear being bombed, and started a skeptical feeling about the cold War. It also made people more aware of espionage, and people often threatened each other thinking they could be a spy. This caused another red scare to begin, and the fear of communism was evident.

This is because they are trying to form a Republic to lead all of China, and they can't decide on a communist lead or a non-communist lead. Mao Zedong's forces won, and communist rule was developed in China. The anti-communist forces lose and fled to Taiwan, and called themselves the Republic of China. Evidence is not required, if one was accused they would be blacklisted. Joseph McCarthy was the most "red scared" politician and he claimed to have a list of communist people in the government whom he would get rid of if elected. A prime example of this is Julius and Ethel Rosenberg who got accused of espionage. They were said to be funneling American governmental and military secrets to communist russia, and were put to jail and killed without any evidence.

A U2 is a spy plane that flies on the edge of outer space and takes pictures of a region. Since they were at such a high altitude, many thought that they could not be reached by a missile since it would not have oxygen. The USSR shoots down this spy plane and the pilot of the plane survives the crash and is captured by the Soviets. This was an extreme embarrassment for the United States since they were caught spying on the USSR. This was yet another victory for the Soviets during the Cold War, and things were looking very poorly for the American containment policies.

They develop their military skills and get them ready to invade Cuba and overthrow the government. The invasion was meant to have US air support, but President Kennedy decided against it since he did not want the US to seem too involved. The invasion was a huge failure, and the US starts to look very bad at this point. This however puts fear into Fidel Castro since he does not want to go to war with the US. This led to him contacting the USSR, and they decide to help and put missiles around Cuba, all pointed at Washington D.C.

The US were now afraid of nuclear attacks from the Russians posted in Cuba. This was the closest threat to thermonuclear war, and it was solved just in time. This was unofficial negotiated by an agreement for the US to take their Nuclear missiles out of Turkey and Italy, and the Russians would take theirs out of Cuba. This showed that we need a direct line of communication with the US president and the Soviet leaders.

This Treaty banned the test of Nuclear Missiles or other weapons underwater, in outer space, or the atmosphere. This did not ban underground tests, but it did prohibit them from being able to cause radioactive waste to leak out from the underground test site. This made the world safer from radioactive waste spreading to them and set a precedent for more peace agreements to be ratified. This also lowered the threat of full-blown nuclear warfare since new models of nuclear missiles could not be tested as well as they could have been previously.

Due to Cuba already falling to a communist revolt, President Lyndon B Johnson sends troops to the Dominican Republic to prevent them from establishing a communist government. The president declared that this was to protect American lives and that it was necessary in order for Americans to feel safe. With another use of military action to prevent the spread of communism, Americans were starting to sense a larger-scale conflict beginning to happen. This event could be seen as another reason the Vietnam War happened since President Johnson was unanimously turning Congress in a direction to support the war.

The US and China established Trade with each other, specifically with China sending pandas to the US. This was known as Panda Diplomacy. Panda Diplomacy refers to the practice of the Chinese government gifting or loaning giant pandas to other countries as a symbol of friendship, goodwill, or to strengthen diplomatic relations. This symbolized a coming together with a communist nation and a capitalist nation which meant that maybe there would be peace re established among nations after all.

Following the resolution of the Vietnam War, Vietnam was its own country and it was ruled by communist forces. In Cambodia, the neighboring country to Vietnam, Communism was also in power. However, this country used some extreme tactics and would often commit genocide. Vietnam then invades and dethrones the leader of Cambodia, who is allied with China. Therefore, China invades Vietnam. This is an example of communist forces fighting communist forces, showing that not all altercations were due to communist and capitalist differences.

The US used Iran in order to get raw materials that were very accessible in Iran like oil. This also leads to the US trying to keep the leader of Iran on the throne thus called the Shah. In November of 1979, he is overthrown by religious fundamentalists and they put a theocracy in place. This puts in a shiah as the ruler by the name of Ayatollah Khomeini. This is not a form of communism, but they do cut off ties with the Americans. The government of Iran captures American college students and holds them hostage for 444 days, and they will give the hostages back in exchange for the ruler who was overthrown and is currently in America.

In 1977, a Marxist Coup d'etat overthrew the government of Afghanistan. The Marxist government attempted to do many reforms, all of which failed. Afghan people were very opposed to the Marxist government, especially the ahteist ideas of the government. This started a series of uprisings in the country, and it looked as if they would try to overthrow the government soon. This led to the soviets getting involved because they did not want to lose a communist ally that was on the borders of their own country. The soviets did put down the threat of an overthrowing of the Afghan government and kept an unpopular force in rule.

This victory was seen as a win in the cold war too, with a communist country losing to a capitalist nation. Washington and Moscow viewed the Olympic medal rankings as competition between democracy and communism to determine which system could produce better athletes. With the US victory, it was shown that the US could produce better athletes that year and this weakened communism.

Because of this, they invaded the island of Grenada from direct orders from Reagan. The US troops put a halt to the regime and appointed an interim government policy In the region. This was the first armed overthrowing of a communist government since World War II, and soviets believed that the invasion violated international law. The stated reason for their boycott was that they were trying to protect their athletes from such a fiercely anti-communist region. This shows how communism and capitalism were starting to effect global events, even with countries that had no interest in choosing sides over communism or capitalism. It also shows some increasing tensions as it is pretty disrespectful to boycott a global event like the Olympics.

The Tiananmen Square protests were student-led demonstrations in 1989 calling for democracy, free speech and a free press in China. Pro-democracy protesters initially marched through Beijing to Tiananmen Square following the April 1989 death of Hu Yaobang, a former Communist Party leader who had worked to introduce democratic reform in China. While mourning Hu, the students called for a more open, democratic government nationwide. Eventually thousands of people joined the students in Tiananmen Square, with the protest’s numbers increasing to the tens of thousands by mid-May. The protests were halted in a deadly crackdown, known as the Tiananmen Square Massacre, by the Chinese government on June 4 and 5, 1989.
