In "What the Body Speaks" exhibition, Kiki Smith has a variety of artwork that has so much meaning to the very bottom of it. In her work, she is using the human body to tell a powerful story. She highlights in her work the themes of vulnerability, healing, pain, and memory through differnet materials like bronze, wax, glass, and paper. Her work is so important to bring to light the physical, emotional, and mental experiences that are often ignored and brushed off.

The exhibition resembles the amount of use of the human body and she mostly uses the female body. She really draws attention to the fact that the body is not a subject and we can use these truths she has in her art. She has pieces that resemble birth, death, transformation, illness and nature. In her work, we are able to unpack the things that happen in everyday life.

There are many things in ART 345 that we have explored each week, and I felt really passionate about what Smith has created and wanted to create an exhibition out of her work because it is something important for me. We get to look at how her work resembles the themes of representation, identity, feminist art, and art that can say more than words can. Smith reminds us in her work that the body is a living canvas of human experience.

My Padlet exhibition Where the Body Speaks is organized using the Freeform layout, which allows viewers to explore the content visually and freely. Each section is centered around a theme connected to Kiki Smith’s work, such as the body, nature, transformation, and memory. I grouped images, videos, and essays near the artworks they relate to, so viewers can make deeper connections. The curatorial statement is placed at the top, followed by three short reflections. I have each box connected to one because everything connects in some way.

Tale, Wound, and Blood Pool all connect through their representation of the female body, their emotional honesty, and their use of material to express pain, memory, and transformation. Together, they form a powerful trio that speaks to what the body holds, and what it reveals. Each figure is shown in a raw, unguarded state - fetal, bleeding, or wounded; yet there’s also a quiet strength in the presence of Smiths work. These works highlight how the body holds pain, memory, and truth.

Diane Fremont’s article explains how Kiki Smith’s art connects the body and the spirit. Smith uses materials like wax, paper, and glass to show what we usually can’t see which is our feelings, memories, and inner life. She shows things like organs and natural elements to remind us that the body is important in both life and death.

Fremont also compares Smith’s art to dreams and poetry. This helped me understand that her work isn’t just about the body but also about emotions and the spirit, too. Her art shows how something very personal can feel meaningful to everyone.
