In 1859 Russia offered to sell Alaska to the U.S. The US Civil War delayed the sale of Alaska. U. S. wanted Alaska because it was a big piece of land for a cheap price. In 1867 U.S. Secretary of State William H. Seward signs a treaty with Russia for the purchase of Alaska for $7.2 million. On January 3, 1959 Alaska became the 49th state in America. The purchase of Alaska was ridiculed by many because they thought that the government just bought a big piece of land of ice and there was nothing good about it . People called Alaska Seward’s Folly,Seward's icebox, and President Andrew Johnson’s Polar bear garden. When they found gold and oil in Alaska everyones opinions on Alaska changed.

America thought Panama was a very good stopping place to build a canal for ships. At first Panama was ruled by Columbia. So the U.S. sent troops to Columbia to help get Panama’s independence. Once Panama was independent the US thought it would be the perfect time to build a Canal. Mostly immigrants built the Canal. Many workers died while building the canal because of sickness.

The Monroe Doctrine began in 1823. It was a United States policy that opposed European colonialism in America. The Doctrine was issued on December 2nd, at the time when almost all Latin American colonies of Spain and Portugal had achieved independence from the Portuguese and Spanish Empires. It also stated that efforts by various European states to take control of any independent state in North or South America would’ve been viewed as “the manifestation of an unfriendly disposition toward the United States.” The Doctrine then noted that the United States woud reconize and not interfere with existing European colonies and the internal affairs of European countries. At the end of the 19th century, Monroe’s declaration was seen as an important moment in the foreign policy of the United States and one of the longest standing tenets.

In 1854 America had a big interest in Cuba. In 1896-1897 many Cubans started to rebel against Spain. Cuba wanted independence from Spain and America offered to help. Jose Marti led the Cuban independence movement. They waited to declare war but after The Uss Maine mysteriously sank and the US blamed the Spanish and declared war. President McKinley demanded a truce and end of Spanish control in Cuba. America supplied money, support, and troops for the war. Yellow journalism also was a big part of the war. It over dramatized lots of things and tried to make everyone pro war. Theodore Roosevelt introduced the Rough Riders into the war. The Rough Riders were made up of a mix of different people. On August 12 , 1898 US and Spain signed the Treaty of Paris marking the official end of the Spanish American War. Through the platt amendment , Cuba became an American protectorate. A country that is technically independent but actually under control of another country. The US signed it because it gave them power to intervene militarily.
