The Foundations and Teachings of Islam (Hadith Jibril)

One day, the Angel Jibril عليه السلام came to the Prophet ﷺ in the form of a man and sat before him.
THE VIRTUES OF ZAKAH AND SADAQAH

INTRODUCTION

Zakāh is one of the five pillars of Islam and is compulsory for Muslims who meet the conditions. It is not meant to burden Muslims but to help them become righteous servants of Allah SWT and to improve the well-being of society.

DEFINITION OF ZAKAH

Zakāh literally means growth, purification, and blessing.

Technically, it is a fixed portion of a Muslim’s wealth that must be given to specific groups as commanded by Allah SWT.

Zakāh shows that worship in Islam includes spiritual, social, and material responsibilities.

IMPORTANCE OF ZAKAH

Zakāh is the third pillar of Islam after faith and prayer. Allah SWT often mentions zakāh together with prayer in the Qur’an, showing its great importance in a Muslim’s life.

ZAKAH AND SADAQAH

In the Qur’an, zakāh is sometimes called ṣadaqah. Both involve giving wealth for the sake of Allah, but they are not the same.

Differences:

•Zakāh

-Compulsory

-Fixed amount and specific recipients

-Given at a specific time

•Ṣadaqah

-Voluntary

-No fixed amount or recipients

-Can be given at any time

VIRTUES OF ZAKAH

1. Tawakkul (Reliance on Allah)

-Giving zakāh shows trust in Allah SWT. A Muslim believes that wealth comes from Allah and that He will replace whatever is given in charity.

2. Ukhūwah (Brotherhood)

-Zakāh strengthens brotherhood among Muslims. It helps the poor and needy, reduces selfishness, and builds unity and care within the community.

CONCLUSION

Zakāh connects:

-Humans with Allah SWT through obedience

-Humans with other humans through helping one another

Zakāh purifies wealth, increases faith, promotes unity, and creates a caring and responsible Muslim society.

How Do Prescribed Acts of Ibadah Foster Moral Excellence and Self- Discipline?

In this roleplay, we shared about

Prescribed acts of ibadah develop self-discipline and moral excellence by training consistency, obedience, and self-control. Acts such as salah and fasting teach Muslims to manage time, control actions, and remain committed even in difficulty. The Qur'an states that prayer prevents immorality and wrongdoing, showing that ibadah shapes

behaviour, not just ritual practice.

Fasting strengthens patience, humility, and emotional control, as it restrains desires and negative behaviour. The Prophet described fasting as a shield, meaning it protects a person from immoral actions. Ibadah also promotes social responsibility through zakat, which cultivates generosity, empathy, and justice, while purifying wealth and character.

Overall, sincere and consistent ibadah influences daily decision- making, increases awareness of Allah, and produces individuals with strong discipline and excellent character.

My Occupation

As Candidate Number 2, my role was to explain how ibadah, especially fasting, helps develop moral excellence by controlling desires and emotions, as well as how fasting acts as a shield that protects Muslims from immoral behaviour through self-discipline.
