         <description><![CDATA[<div>When: 1/29/1850<br>What happened: </div><div>California becomes a free state, land won in Mexico war would be territories and would vote on slavery, slave trade in Washington D.C. would end, and everyone had to help catch runaway slaves.<br>What was the cause:</div><div>The North wanted California as a free state but the South wanted it as a slave state. The U.S. had a lot of land they didn’t know what to do with.<br>What was the effect:</div><div>South loved the compromise but the North hated it.</div>]]></description>
