INVENTION: In 1882, Thomas Edison created the first commercially successful power station in London. It powered nearby services, and worked great.
TECHNOLOGY: Power Stations housed giant steam engines that could turn out power levels previously unseen. They used massive lines of cables to send the power to where it needed to go. They proved far more efficient that any water based source.
POSITIVE IMPACT: The Power Station created a new, more efficient way to provide energy. It allowed the public in areas not near a water or other natural source to receive energy with ease. It allowed the localization of power, and opened the door to many new electricity based inventions.
NEGATIVE IMPACT: The Power Station created a whole new pollution problem. Gas and waste from power plants is immense, especially in areas with higher populations like cities. Also, the resources needed to build one and maintain it are costly.

Invented in 1817, the term bicycle was coined in France in the 1860s. There are several early but unverified claims for the invention of bicycle-like machines. The earliest comes from a sketch said to be from 1534 and attributed to Gian Giacomo Caprotti, a pupil of Leonardo da Vinci.
Tech: Many cyclists wanted to use their machines to travel; some of them went around the world. Annie Londonderry did so in the 1880s, taking 15 months. Six Indian men cycled 71000 km around the world in the 1920s.
Impact/Positive: The invention of bicycles helped to make everyday transportation easier for the common people, also the invention of the bicycled lead to later inventions such as mountain bikes, hybrid and commuter bikes.
Impact/Negative: There's not many negative effects from the invention of the bicycle. They have helped to increase transportation, exercise, and reduce pollution.

Invented: Was invented by Alfred Nobel who received patents for the invention in England on May 7, 1867 and in Sweden on October 19, 1867.
Why?: The mining and construction/demolition practices at the time were very unsafe for workers. Gunpowder couldn't be as well controlled as dynamite, so there were many more casualties on the job.
How Does it Work?: Dynamite uses an absorbent material, like sawdust, to absorb nitroglycerin and stabilize the explosion. The fuse is lit and triggers the blasting cap which causes a small explosion that goes on to trigger a bigger one.
Positive Impacts on our Country: It was a much safer alternative to gunpowder and nitroglycerin, which can't be contained as easily. It has been used in warfare and much safer construction and mining practices.
Negative Impacts on our Country: Although illegal, many people use it for blast fishing, which stuns fish and makes them float to the top. However, you cannot control what gets stunned or blown up, so it can harm the environment immensely. Also, dynamite has been used in many terrorist acts such as suicide bombings, and being key ingredients to bombings at large events.
