Stanza 1: Dickinson describes how people chose their friends and loved ones and then once they are complete they "present no more" and "shut the door."
Stanza 2: Dickinson discusses how it is not money and power that attracts all people to friendship or love. She stresses that through the repetition of the word "unmoved."
Stanza 3: Dickinson tells about the permanence of the choices that the soul makes.
This poem explores the reason why people choose to to make some people or things more important than others in their eyes. Dickinson believes that it is our soul that helps people to determine what and who is important to them.

In this poem Emily Dickinson is trying to discover and explain how she believes a community is built. Dickinson is trying to contrive what it is that causes people to chose the friends they do. She believes that it is the soul that guides one to surround themselves with the friends they chose and significant other they chose. She believes it is our souls that communicate with each other to lead us to people that would best be suited to help us prosper and grow. She believes it is up to each of us to decide what traits are important for friendships and which ones are trivial.

In the first four lines of the poem Dickinson is expressing that to many madness is the only thing that makes sense and to others sense is like madness. She is trying to inform the audience that something that is crazy to one person might be order for another and vise versa. In the poem when Dickinson says “Assent-and you are sane-” she is saying that approval by others will make one sane whereas when she says “Demur-you’re straightway dangerous” she is saying the disapproval by others with dangerous to the mind.

In this poem Dickinson is expressing that her rebellion against the traditional roles of women in society to some people may be insane but to her it makes complete sense. Dickinson is trying to also express how the opinions of others can shape a person's beliefs or their opinion of themselves.

The Soul selects her own Society —
Then — shuts the Door —
To her divine Majority —
Present no more —

Unmoved — she notes the Chariots — pausing —
At her low Gate —
Unmoved — an Emperor be kneeling
Upon her Mat —

I’ve known her — from an ample nation —
Choose One —
Then — close the Valves of her attention —
Like Stone —

The rhyming scheme for the first stanza of the poem is ABAB but then for the remaining two stanzas the first and third lines rhyme but lines two and four only look similar. The poem is filled with short phrases which ensure that certain words of the poem are emphasized for affect. There are also a large number of hyphens in the poem with symbolizes pauses in the poem. These pauses add dramatic affect to the overall tone of the passage. The repetition of the word "unmoved" in the second and fourth lines of the second stanza adds emphasis to the idea that a person will remain unmoved in their values for friendship. It is supposed to emphasize that money and power cannot but love or friendship.
