It is a game first created in the 70s, and has grown immensely popular in recent years. Unlike most games, this game transcends time and is not always finished after one game. In fact, some campaigns last for years! The game finishes when the players decide to end it.  

The game is played using dice, some paper, and a whole lot of imagination! It is a story game, in which players play a character with their own skills and personality within the world that the Dungeon Master or Game Master (DM or GM respectively) has set out for them. Players make decisions on what their character would do in the situation given, and roll dice to see whether they succeed, fail, or anything in between! Here is an example (and a sample!) of what the DM might be telling you during the game. 

“You find yourself in the adventurer’s guild. Today is the first day for many new recruits and the guild receptionist is overflowing with work. Nevertheless, the brunette smiles from ear to ear to each and everyone of the new members, calming down their nerves and motivating them to get started on this new phase of their lives! Merel, you are next in line, what would you like to do?” 

For those of you who are interested in playing, or merely observing the game, I have created a sign-up form. With this form, I, the prospective DM, will be able to better judge how many people will be joining the sessions, how many (new) players want to play, and when the best time would be to play this wonderful game! In the form you can also ask more questions if you have any, and I will get back to answer these questions for you!

I am the fake American of the LA’s! I am from Almere, the Netherlands despite what my accent may illude you to believe. I like ice hockey, video games, tabletop games such as D&D, archery, dancing (ballroom & latin), and finally I am a HUGE linguistics nerd. I specialize in phonetics and phonology (the speech sounds of languages), with syntax as a close second, but I am interested in practically all different aspects of linguistics. Outside of HvA I am in my final year of the rMA linguistics and communication at the UvA, and I teach Dutch to expats (NT2) part-time. I'm a former HvA student and I'm back at it again to help you with your studies! I'm from Hilversum and I have a BA in literature and linguistics. Besides that, like Angel, I'm in my final year of the rMA Linguistics and Communication at the UvA. I like reading, playing video games, watching movies and doing yoga. I also love collecting vintage books and have some that are from the 1800s (they're absolutely gorgeous). Oh, and, I have the cutest sausage dog in the world! His name is Gimli. Lastly, I have the most fun while analyzing language. I love me some research and I specialize in syntax, historical linguistics and typology (typology: the systematic comparison of differences and similarities between a whole bunch of languages). In fact, I published an article about Syntax and Typology in 2020!
