Before colonization, there were thousands of years of history, culture and language built into Pakistani life. While they were being conquered over these years, they still had their different roots all coming together to form one culture. When the British colonized Pakistan and India in 1947, the culture was partially lost because a foreign ruler will have different languages and different ways of life. The British split up India into 3 parts: India, Pakistan, and East Pakistan which would become Bangladesh.

When Britain first colonized Pakistan, nobody was prepared for the communal rioting and the mass movement of population that followed on June 3, 1947 with the British announcement of imminent independence and partition. While Pakistan did get independence, there was a lot of unrest in the region because of fighting between religious groups.

The Indian Independence Bill ended the 200 year rule of Britain over Pakistan and India. Anti-British demonstrations increased after World War II which lead to the Indian National Congress accepting the creation of Pakistan.

Because Pakistan was part of the British Commonwealth, that means that it was allied with the US during the Cold War. They were also a part of NATO. The US and Britain were able to have access to facilities in Pakistan and during the Indo-Pakistani War the US placed embargoes on arms shipments and the embargo remained in place for 10 years. In 1971, Pakistan facilitated a secret visit by US National Security Advisor Henry Kissinger to Beijing. Some say that this signaled the beginning of the end of the Cold War because the communist movement was now seen as having a crack.

Overall, while I do think that with Britain the political, social and religious unrest was more under control, I do think that the country was better off because their culture aligns more with the other countries around it better than the more Westernized countries like Britain.
