This multimedia art piece was created to depict a portrait of Malala Yousafzai to help reflect on the life story Malala tells in the memoir “I Am Malala”. This art piece uses paint to depict a portrait of Malala Yousafzai and a photo collage of all her charitable acts and achievements in the background. The colors used to paint the portrait of Malala are taken from the cover of her memoir; having this direct connection to her memoir in the foreground represents how she created a platform for herself to share this story and impact the world with her activism. This memoir was a starting point for her to be able to tell her story in a way to inspire young girls to fight for their rights. This art piece represents how life experiences can shape a person and their perspective on life. Just by looking at a person you cannot begin to understand their hardships, achievements, and values. It is only until you look at the full picture where you can appreciate someone's life story and their journey to where they are today. Malala’s life story is an incredible truth about how determination and hope can change the world; Malala continues to fight for the education of young girls and believes that education is one of the most powerful tools in society. The photo collage that makes up the background of this art piece helps represent how Malala’s constant stand with education equality impacts the world; the various images depict how Malala has been a savior towards these young girls who otherwise would not have a continuing education if it was not for Malala and her activism. They show how Malala’s story impacted many people around the world and how her actions continue to change society for the better.

This passage from the book ‘I Am Malala’ is incredibly significant. During this part of the book Malala was faced with tragedy when the Taliban shot her in the head, the rigorous healing process weighed her between life and death, but she prevailed. From this miraculous recovery Malala came apon a fork in the road, should she use this immense platform to her advantage and continue to speak up about women's education rights or is she afraid of the real consequences of disagreeing with the Taliban. In this quote Malala shares her determination towards what she believes in. In this moment, she chooses to continue and not let her physical injuries slow her down from achieving justice. This act of terrorism from the Taliban does not take away from who she is or what she is fighting for. This quote represents a real turning point for Malala in this very moment she chose not to shy away from the Taliban after her attack, but to keep going forward to pursue fighting for the rights of young women's education. Malala uses her attack from the Taliban as a second shot at life, a chance to achieve greatness and change the world for the better. This crucial time in Malala's life embarks on the first steps of her activism career; Malala uses this second shot at life as a starting point for continuing her platform to help support young women's education. This quote represents a time in Malala's life where she chose between accepting defeat or fight for the rights of many. This activist chose to fight for the rights of many and ended up changing the world in the process.

The poem “Still I Rise” by Maya Angelou is a message of determination and justice. Maya Angelou wrote this poem to share a story of the spirt of her black community. While faced with racism and adversity, she shared her faith in overcoming her hardships and triumphs (Spacey, 2016). This poem's theme also describes Malala's story on her journey though women's educational activism. Despite the Taliban and all their supporters plotting against her, Malala was able to rise though the adversity and create a better more inclusive world to be a part of. In many aspects of Malala's life, she has risen to the challenge and fought through adversity. When Malala was speaking out against for women's educational rights against the Taliban, when Malala was fighting for her life in the hospital, and how she continues to speak out for what young women's educational rights today are all great examples of how Malala continues to fight against adversity and rise. In Maya Angelou's poem, “Still I Rise” she uses a lot of repetition to get her point across. In Malala's many activism speeches, repetition is used to help convey the audience of her message to support young women to an equal change at education. The main theme of Maya Angelou's poem, “Still I rise, and the connection to Malala's story is significant. Both themes share the idea of rising through adversity. Maya Angelou, in her poem, shares how her and the black community have faith to rise against adversity and racism. In Malala's memoir, she chooses to rise against adversity facing the Taliban and speaking out for young women's equal rights to education. Both stories share how rising though hardships and having determination can change your outlook on life for the better.

Prompt #5: Find a piece of visual art that reminds you of the text. Explain the connection between them.

This visual art piece is a World War 2 propaganda poster that depicted a woman named Rosie the Riveter; this poster encouraged women to join many defense industries to make efforts towards the war. “Between 1940 and 1945, the female percentage of the U.S. workforce increased from 27 percent to nearly 37 percent, and by 1945 nearly one out of every four married women worked outside the home” (History.com Editors, 2010). Rosie represented a new age of working women and was a huge step towards women's equality and allowed for women's role in society to continues to grow and become more significant. This is similar to the great efforts of Malala to create equal educational opportunities to young women around the world. Both Malala and Rosie represent the goal for women's equality, weather they are fighting for equality in the workforce or education they are both used to create a better world for women. The fight for women's equality started with Rosies the Riveter encouraging women into the workforce and is continuing with Malala and her fight towards women's education rights. Malala uses her platform to fund charities and speaks out to help bring light to the inequality young women still face in today's society towards their education opportunities. This World War Two propaganda poster reminds me of Malala's memoir and her story towards young women's education because both are steppingstone towards women's equality. The propaganda poster back in World War 2 was a symbol for women's equality in the workforce, while Malala today is fighting for women's equality in their education. Both the art piece and Malala's activism help fight for women and their quality today; they both represent women's activism and hold a piece of history as they continue to fight for equal rights in today's world.

While reading Malala Yousafzai’s memoir, “I Am Malala”, my first thoughts were how incredible grateful I felt to be able to live in a country where I am able to attend school, have an education and not have to worry about discrimination or adversity. Reading Malala’s memoir allowed me to think about the many privileges that I have in my life and how that could be different for people who were born in a different country of a different race. While reading the book I also felt incredibly inspired, seeing what Malala has been though and how she used her life experiences to build the platform she has today was incredible to learn about. When people go through hardships, they either come out of the experience discouraged and small or they use it as a chance to grow and improve; Malala used her tragic attack by the Taliban as a way to create a platform to further speak up about women's education rights. Hearing her story made me proud to be in a world with so many educated women wanting to make a change in today's society. On the contrary, I often felt confused while reading the book; after I would finish reading a chapter, I would think to myself, what I would do if I was in Malala's situation? While in the hospital dealing with the harsh after math of the Taliban shooting, Malala was in a great deal of pain but she continues to fight, her extreme determination and passion for women's educational rights is outstanding and I envy her for being able to push through. This memoir made me appreciate the rights that I have and the many activists that continues to fight for equality. Malala’s life story is incredibly interesting and by reading her memoir I only gained respect for the countless efforts she makes to gain education equality for young girls all around the world.
