Besides from drunkenness, scholars and writers have proposed a variety of other reasons of death, spanning from brain lesions, epilepsy, and TB to cholera, syphilis, and perhaps even rabies. Another widely held belief is that Poe was a victim of "cooping," a frequent tactic at the period in which Baltimore's infamously corrupt government officials hired thugs to abduct down-and-out persons, particularly the homeless.

People can theorize all they want, but like stated before, only he knows the truth. But, on the bright side, his life brought us many great literary works from "The Grotesque and Arabesque" to "The Raven". He inspired many people to become writers, and his life probably interested many, from the 13yr old cousin wife to his dad disowning him for being a failure at school.

What was Poe's early life like? Why and how did he become a poet?

He was born on January 19, 1806 in Boston. Both his parents were traveling actors, his mother being the better one. His father left his mother to raise three children on her own, but she quickly passed the responsibility when she shortly after died of tuberculosis.

Edgar Poe's name was changed to Edgar Allen Poe when he was adopted by John and Frances Allen. They were a rich couple and sent him to a good school. That is where his found a passion for poetry.

When Poe was 17, he was engaged to Elmira Royster and left for University of Virginia. He came back shortly after because he was in serious debt (around $2,000) after gambling all his tuition money to generate more.

His fiance had already moved on when he came back home, and Poe didn't want to deal with his foster father, so he moved back to Boston. There, he joined the army and quickly climbed up the ranks. In December of 1828, he was promoted to the highest rank that a non-commissioned officer could get. Nonetheless, he left April of 1829 and went to Baltimore.
