Discuss the author/composer. How did their life reflect the 1920s? How did they influence the 1920s?

The piece of artwork my group chose was Chop Suey by Edward Hopper. The painting Chop Suey might’ve been unknown to a lot of us in this generation. However, the painting changed peoples views and challenged their minds in the 1920’s decade. Continuing, the painting was made in 1929 and reflected the 1920’s in a few ways. To begin, the painting reflects two young, middled-class flappers sitting across from each other in a restaurant. Women from the 1830’s to late 1920’s - early 1930’s were usually segregated upon eating arrangements from men or needed a chaperone to dine. On the other hand, Chop Suey places had rapidly become more popular in the mid 1920’s due to the new working class. Edward Hopper’s painting reflects the shifting roles and views of American women in the 1920’s. Furthermore, Chop Suey places were one of the only lunch places the new female workforce was welcomed. Chop Suey influenced the 1920’s by loudly representing the good but controversial change in this decade. Soon after his painting more and more restaurants became unsegregated from man and woman to dine. In addition, women also did not need to be chaperoned to eat as much like before his painting. Additionally, women became more visible and prominent in the restaurant industry.

Edward Hopper was an American painter. He was also a known printmaker but was renowned for his oil paintings. He born and raised in New York. He was fortunate enough to live during the Harlem renaissance. During the 1920’s two major things happened, the prohibition and women’s right to vote. A lot of Hoppers paintings during that time were set in bar like “Tables for Ladies” (1930). Hopper tackled the issue of woman’s rights in his prints. He created one titled “Model reading” (1925). Instead of painting women nude he painted them doing more normal things like reading, or working. In Hoppers work he was more concerned with human values and using art to tackle real world problems. One of these works was Chop Suey. To a regular person it’s simply two women but to him it meant more. “Hopper’s restaurant paintings reflect the shifting role and view of American women in the late 1920s. Chop suey joints were spaces where the new female workforce was welcome — indeed, the woman facing the viewer is the painting’s focal point.”

Hopper’s work was generally accepted.
“His depictions of New England garnered Hopper important recognition: in 1923 his first sale to a public institution (the Brooklyn Museum's purchase of The Mansard Roof) and in 1924 a solo exhibition at Frank Rehn's Fifth Avenue gallery that sold out quickly. Critics admired his deft handling of the medium, straightforward style, and ability to transform vernacular architecture into something beautiful.”
