Iran took control of the Embassy and the Hostages to defy the U.S.

First, you have to understand what happened in Lebanon. The U.S. Sent 800 troops to help keep the peace in an area torn by Civil War. In 1983 a truck with thousands of pounds of explosives ran into a building holding American Military Personnel. This killed 243 Americans. Reagan withdrew the remaining Marines in 1984. In 1985 the U.S. sold weapons to Iran in exchange for the promise that Iran would pressure Lebanon’s terrorist groups to release American hostages. The plan did not work and went against the U.S. administration’s policy of negotiating with terrorists.Money from the sell of the weapons was used to fund the contras. CONTRA- a member of the guerrilla group opposed to the communist government of Nicaragua. IN 1983 Congress made selling to the CONTRAS illegal. Reagan accepted responsibility. Top Aides were convicted but later the convictions were overturned on technical grounds. This was the one major tarnish on Reagan’s administration

Some Latin American Countries hated this act because they said it was American Imperialism. Americans and Some in Panama loved it because a dictator who was smuggling drugs was removed.

Saddam Hussein the dictator of Iraq had accrued tons of war debt in their constant battle with Iran. This left them looking for money and they claimed that Kuwait a small bordering country who was rich in oil actually belonged to Iraq. On August 2, 1990 Iraq invaded Kuwait. Once they took Kuwait they headed to Saudi Arabia where 1/2 of the world’s oil reserve is. $$$$$$$$$$$$ With the support of Congress President Bush Launched Operation Desert Storm ( The Persian Gulf War). In just a little over a month The United States had helped free Kuwait from Iraq and the grips of Saddam Hussein.
