Haiti was the first colony with African slaves to gain independence from a french colony. After this, in 1805, Dessalines, a former field slave, crowned himself as emperor of Haiti.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Christopher Columbus discovered a large island in the region of the Western Atlantic Ocean that later came to be known as the Caribbean.<br>The island of Hispaniola (which is today occupied by the nations of Haiti and the Dominican Republic), was on of the many landfills Columbus discovered on his voyage to the New World. One discovered, the Spainsh built the New World's first settlement at La Navidad on Haiti's north coast.</div>]]></description>

The French call their new territory Saint-Domingue and the Spanish call their territory Santo Domingo. St. Domingue today is now also known as the Pearl of the Antilles.</div>]]></description>

The members who assassinated Dessalines included Alexandre Petion and Henri Christophe. Dessalines was assassinated north of the capital city, Port-au-Prince, at Pont Larnage, on 17 October 1806, on his way to fight the rebels.<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <title>Civil War racks Haiti &amp; suicide of Henri Christophe</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Civil war racks the country, which divides into the northern kingdom  and the southern republic. The northern kingdom was governed by Henri Christophe and the Southern republic governed by Alexandre Petion. Christophe was faced with a rebellion  by his own army and commits suicide. This paved the way for Jean Pierre Boyer to reunify the country and become president of the entire republic in 1820.</div><div><br></div>]]></description>

In 1821, President Boyer invaded Santo Domingo for the third time with intent of unifying the island. After this, the entire island was controlled by Haiti as a whole until 1844.</div>]]></description>

Matthew was considered a late season hurricane as a 5 on the Saffir- Simpson scale.
