They couldn't afford expensive presents, and they didn't want us to think we weren't as good as other kids...". Jeanette was speaking. I think this is a significant quote because her parents know they didn't have the money or help to make their own kids believe in Santa because if they did and never got presents they wouldn't think they are good kids or they need to do better. I say in a way it was good that their parents did that and told them the truth because they wouldn't be as hurt rather then thinking they aren't good kids.

Why did this quote stand out to you?

Formalist Lens

Choose three (3) Formalist Lens Questions to respond to. Your responses should thoroughly respond to the prompt in at least three sentences.

1. Choose an event that happens in the reading that reveals a little bit about the author’s personality. Explain the passage and what has been revealed to you.

Something that has been revealed about her personality is when she is talking about a story that happen when she was three years old and was on fire. For me it showed that she was mature and independent at three years old, and it also showed that her going to the hospital she enjoyed it because they would have good food there for her and it was nice and calm then home. Another thing is that she was talkative with the nurse that were helping her burns.

3. What recurring patterns (repeated or related words, images, etc.) can you find?

Some recurring patterns that has happen was when ever someone was in the hospital, instead of paying and getting the bill the parents would make a run from the hospital and leave. For example when Jeannette and her brother was born they didn't pay anything and ran away, they were always on the move so they wouldn't get caught. When Jeannette was in the hospital at three years old the same thing happen were her dad grabbed her and made a run for it out the door without paying.

6. Choose a significant event that occurs in your reading. What do you think the author's purpose was in telling that part of the story?

Something that happen in the book and she was saying that her mom and dad were arguing about how long their baby was inside the moms stomach, because of that the dad was getting mad at saying bad words to her. It got to a point where the mom slide over to the drivers seat and stopped on the break and got out of the car in the night, the dad told her to come back but she wasn't listening. After that happen the dad starting yelling at her and was chasing her with the car fast, but it was during the night and couldn't see where the mom was only when the headlights flashed near here. Jeannette and her siblings were scared in the back watching this all happen, and eventually the mom got back into the car. I think she told this story just to show what her and her siblings went through most of the time, having to deal with their parents arguments and having to watch and listen to it. Something like that you wouldn't forget and I think wanted to tell us just to hear how she saw it though her own eyes.

Your responses should thoroughly respond to the prompt in at least three sentences.

How are class differences presented in the work? Are the characters aware or unaware of the economic and social forces that affect their lives?

In "The Glass Castle," class differences are shown by how poor they are compared to others. The kids know they're poor and feel different from their friends because of it.

How do economic conditions determine the characters' lives?

The family lack of money affects everything they do. They move a lot, live in bad conditions, and struggle to get enough food. These thought times make the kids strong and clever, shaping who they become.

Does the work explicitly embrace or reject socialism?

I think both because it tells the stories of the family's struggle. While it shows problems with the system, its more about how the family survives and stays strong
