Theme: Knowledge allows people to gain power over others because of the respect the knowledgeable person receives, especially when they assist others.
Exemplification: Prospero and Caliban display this idea because of the power Prospero holds over Caliban due to his assistance to the creature. Essentially, Prospero has so much knowledge while Caliban could be viewed as "stupid" and because of this, Propero gains power over Caliban and maintains that power by practicing his knowledge.

Theme: Those who wield power must be chosen with caution because they can twist their power in ways that damage others and can hold their power against others.
Exemplification: Prospero frequently asserts his power over others on the island including his servants, Ariel and Caliban, and his daughter, Miranda. With Ariel, Prospero gains his power of Ariel by rescuing him from his prison and has kept him as a servant ever since. Prospero frequently uses Ariel's past against him to keep Ariel as a servant and force him to do whatever Prospero wants him to, without physically forcing him. This displays how people with power can use it in horrid ways to ensure they get what they want, so people must be cautious with choosing those who wield power over them.

Perspective

Theme: Perspective is based largely upon past experiences which can influence current behaviors and actions when faced with certain personalities or situations.
Exemplification: Ariel and Caliban are examples of how past experiences play a large role in perspective and therefore actions because of how different of a background they have: Ariel had a powerful master and a great life, until that master turned on him in an instant and grew a tree around him, while Caliban was with his mother until she left and died and was then raised and taught by Prospero until Caliban attempted to rape Miranda, then he was banished to live under a rock. So, because of these different backgrounds (and personalities), Ariel and Caliban have different relationships and thoughts towards Prospero. Ariel believes Prospero is a good many, but fears Prospero might turn on him like his past master, so he wishes to be freed from Prospero's debt and to live free, but he doesn't hate or think that negatively Prospero. Caliban, on the other hand, despises Prospero and would do anything to kill Prospero or leave him far behind, which is due to his personality and perspective shift after his mother died and Prospero started manipulating him and punishing him.

Theme: Knowledge allows people to gain power over others because of the respect the knowledgeable person receives, especially when they assist others.
Second Exemplification: The relationship between Miranda and Prospero is another excellent example of how knowledge is a great force to get power over others since Prospero has so much more life experience than Miranda. Prospero has seen the outside world, he's met other people, learned magic and other subjects very in-depth and Miranda has not gained that knowledge so Prospero takes his opportunity to gain such great power over his own daughter. He almost creates a threshold between himself and Miranda to prove his dominance and often disregards Miranda's trust by withholding information and manipulating her almost into being another one of his servants which displays how much of a role knowledge plays when it comes to the distribution of power.

Topic: Power / Knowledge
Thesis: People with power are influential to others because of the respect earned from their wisdom, but ultimately tend to manipulate others along the way.
Act 2 example: ANTONIO. "Here lies your brother, / No better than the earth he lies upon. / If he were that which now he’s like—that’s dead— / Whom I with this obedient steel, three inches of it, / Can lay to bed forever" (Shakespeare 2.1.321-25).
Act 3 example: PROSPERO. "And these mine enemies are all knit up / In their distractions. They now are in my power; / And in these fits I leave them while I visit / Young Ferdinand, whom they suppose is drowned" (Shakespeare 3.3.109-12).
