This approach is entirely suitable in a boys decile 10 school such as mine and includes camps to our "Lodge"- yes we are very lucky - but we had to seek funding to pay for the lads to get there and to buy food etc. - the projects are real - building a dam for hydro electricity, measuring river flow, building a foot bridge, trapping stoats, monitoring 5 minute bird counts - having a week of immersion studies

Sometimes students don't want to work in this way. There needs to be a way to accommodate this and ensure that the project is appropriate to the school culture. I couldn't imagine some of my students wanting to make a bbq table or do a sports based activity. As mentioned making this happen requires time and space for teachers to design the program.

The contextualised learning meant it had relevance for the students and this further increased their engagement. They saw the value in what they were doing and could apply it to themselves. This was enhanced as they gained lots of credits often across more than one subject area so this added to their sense of self worth and satisfaction in their learning. Producing something lasting and tangible would have been very satisfying too.

I know there are forums to share these, but I wonder why it is not happening more. I look on Pond for this kind of thing and find nothing useful to me. The efficiency of our system could be improved if we have a more sharing culture

Challenges which were highlighted were around selling the ideas to HOFs, questions on how to assess, planning and writing of standards and assessments. Access to technology for some schools is a valid point. Some students were a little slow to settle into the project and then there was the question of validating authenticity.

Organisation is key - an agreeable SLT. We recently had Maurie Abraham from Hobsonville Point at our school and his comment on cross curricular/ project based learning was that his teachers had found that 2 teachers and collaboration was the place to start. Any bigger and it got tricky at least at the beginning. There is a lot two subjects can do.

I love the idea of an at risk group who really needs the help to have something designed for them and the teachers involved being given the time to organise, teach and mark. I also really like the idea that kids can just DO stuff without needing to be assessed. I am wary of the boss who gets on the bandwagon and states that every student will be a part of project learning and the timetable adjusted accordingly......

Project based learning is a great way to not only engage students in choosing the topics that they may be assessed on, but also to allow them to see that knowledge is not 'silo'd' into compartments, but is relavant across an infinite number of situations and contexts. My school years have been confined to history for decades, but I can still remember, in a lot of cases, wondering what the point was of what I was learning. I have been using project based learning for a couple of years now, and am a firm convert having seen the positive engagement and increased confidence of the students. many of them are enquiring about the topic of the next project before they have finished the one they are on! Another huge benefit is the ability to assess multiple outcomes at the same time.

Each project needs to be carefully planned and resourced to ensure that it is both a positive learning experience for the students and also meets the requirements for cross curricular assessing. this takes time, but, in my experience, you become more adept at it as you go along. These days i find it reasonably easy . It is also a very fulfilling task. finding ways to excite your students brains and learning motivation is incredibly exciting in itself. I found that producing an example and the final results of a learning experience like this to other staff members was a great way to get them on board. Another great way to enthuse them is to invite them to come and have a look at the learning while it is happening. Resourcing is a perennial problem. Time to plan, gather physical resources and provide opportunities for collaboration and discussions can be a problem. Sometimes though, i think this can be mitigated by the fact that you spend so much less time on assessing, and also on writing a myriad of assesments to cover one outcome. As this form of assessing becomes more accepted, it may be that physical resources will be easier to get as they can be used not just for one learnign task, but across multiple tasks and outcomes thereby ensuring that they are possibly more economic to fund than the conventional assessment tasks. .

I do it already in History - where students use one topic for all three internal standards BUT I am keen to include other standards. Ahhh, the ideas are endless......

While I think this is ideal for engaging students in a L1 Science course tailored to prepare students for life, I'm not sure how it would work in a course that was preparing students for the rigors of the current system of science study at university.

I agree that PBL can often lead to increased engagement and therefore improve achievement for at risk students, but I am yet to see quantitative evidence from a large sample size to demonstrate that this approach works for the majority of students. I'd like to see this sort of evidence, rather than anecdotal evidence, prior to rolling this out (experimenting on) a large group/ cohort of senior students.

My understanding is that project based learning (PBL) is teacher driven whereas Inquiry based learning (IBL) is student driven. This may be a helpful distinction. There is a clear trend in the increasing development of MLEs towards IBL with students generating the knowledge through a series of research questions/tasks which they decide. Critical questions being...what do you know now and what do you need to know? Along with this the creation of benchmarks of success and success criteria are critical...this gets to the heart of determining a standard, achievement criteria etc.

Looking at 'Te Kura Maori o Nga Tapuwae''s case we can find some possible ways to address this issue i.e. Having clarity around what is required of your students, the standard and starting small with PBL. Further to this, time could be saved if more collaboration amongst other schools who have previously used PBL within similar subjects could avoid earlier mistakes in design of assessment tasks. Inevitably, a new type of learning will always take that little bit extra at first until others are on board and assessment becomes more robust.
