In Chapter Nine of 'Prisoner B-3087', the protagonist is Yanek, a young Jewish boy in Nazi-occupied Poland. He was the only remaining member of his family in the Kraków ghetto in the summer of 1942. He worked at the tailor shop in Kraków in the hopes that it would save him from the deportation. One day, the Nazis came to the shop and took him and other workers to the Plaszów labor camp. Even tho Yanek expected to be taken away, he was not prepared for it when it happened. Despite all of his loved ones being gone and having no possessions left, he is not sad to leave the ghetto, knowing that there is nothing left for him. Inside Plaszów, the men and women were separated and all valuables were taken from them. Yanek and the others were then made to take off their clothes and given new wooden shoes and uniforms. He was left in shock, realizing he was now officially a prisoner. His uncle warns him to keep his identity secret and not to stand out in order to survive in this harsh environment. He also finds out that his parents are most likely dead. Yanek must keep himself alive at all costs, and cannot allow the Nazis to erase his family from the pages of history.

Denisa Baciu

Chapter 10 stars with Amon Goeth who shoots Jews in the parade grounds while listening to music on his record player. To avoid being shot, Yanek works at the tailor shop and Uncle Moshe works in a furrier shop. When the tailor shop closes down, Moshe trades his daily rations to a kapo to get Yanek assigned to a new job outside the camp. Yanek is brought back to the Kraków ghetto and told to search for anything of value, but if they steal anything for themselves, they will be killed. He is overcome by memories of his parents and friends, missing them deeply. Yanek finds Mr. Tatarka dead in a pool of his own blood and runs up to the roof to get a breath of fresh air. He finds Oskar’s coat in the corner and notices a lump in one of the sleeves. He rips the seams open and finds 1,000 zloty, which he sews into his own prison uniform. He inspects the clothes and finds a pair of diamond earrings, which he hooks inside his jacket under his arms. When he returns, he tells Moshe to meet him in his barracks at dinner and Moshe replies, “Goeth nineteen, Jews nil.” In chapter 10, I was most impressed by how Yanek had the courage to take the money found in the house.

Lorena Borbe

Uncle Moshe surprises Yanek with a half a loaf of bread he got from smuggling. He also has a secret place where he has hidden the money, with the hope of finding more food. Although the bread is no longer warm, Yanek is grateful and values it more than he ever did before the war. The bread, a symbol of life and of the times before the war, reminds Yanek of his mother and the life he once had. The half a loaf of bread is a welcome bonus for Yanek, as it gives him hope for survival. He is confronted with the dilemma of whether or not to share his own food, knowing that it could save the man's life but also risking his own survival. In the end, Yanek chooses to keep his food and watches the man below him die of starvation. At the end of the chapter Yanek finds out that his uncle is dead. He couldn’t believe it, but he had to accept it. What impressed me the most is the consequences of the lack of resources during extreme situations, while posing questions of morality and humanity.

Covaci Luca

He notices the different symbols on the prisoners’ uniforms, such as the star of David for Jews, red triangles for political prisoners, green for criminals, black for gypsies, purple for Jehovah’s Witness, and pink for homosexuals. His uncle Moshe tells him that he must have no name, no personality, no family, no friends, and that his parents are likely dead. chapter 9, what impressed me the most were the different symbols on the uniforms.

Amon Goeth was known to sit on the balcony of his house and shoot Jews with a rifle while listening to music from his record player. To try and escape his wrath, many people took jobs outside the camp, such as at a tailor shop or furrier's shop. Unfortunately, the tailor shop eventually closed, leaving the Jews vulnerable to Goeth's brutality. To survive, Uncle Moshe helped one of the Jews acquire a new job outside the camp, where he was able to escape daily shootings. People were asked to search all the homes for anything of value. Yanek's emotions and memories come flooding back as he is tasked to clean out the apartment building where he and his family used to live. Yanek discovers one thousand zloty sewn into his father's coat while exploring his old home. After finding a pair of diamond earrings hidden in his family's clothes, he succeeds in smuggling them back to the camp. Though the guards don't think the Jews have anything of value to smuggle, the young man is relieved to find they didn't search him.

After a hard day, the boy fell without being able to climb into bed and no one helped him to get up. The boy wishes his uncle was there. Standing on the floor, he thinks about whether to go under the floor of the shack, but he changed his mind and finally managed to climb into bed. The next day he showed some boys the hiding place under the floor, so for a while Yanek and the two boys to whom he showed the hiding place were hiding under the floor instead of going to work, until one day Goeth came with the dogs him and they had to sneak out and pretend they had work, as they were about to be caught and killed since then Yanek said he would no longer hide under the floor of the barracks.

Mihai Răchită

One night, the boy tried to get into bed but he was so exhausted that he could not make it. If only his uncle had been there with him, he thought. He contemplated going to the crawl space of the shack, but he dismissed the idea and eventually managed to get into bed. The next day, he showed some other boys the hiding place and they used it whenever they could, until one day Goeth came with the dogs.
