The department controlled six ministries held by a minister, all under direct control of the Emperor. The Jesuits were curious about and generally respectful of Chinese culture and customs, including religious rites and Confucianism, and the government systems of the Ming. China soon started to question weather the Jesuits had gone too far with their attempts to make the Catholic faith more compatible with Chinese beliefs, especially on the question of Confucius and the ancestors.
