Letter knowledge is about how to recognize the 26 uppercase and 26 lowercase letter shapes, names, and sounds. Learning these things also helps in furthering the student's phonological awareness. When students have good letter knowledge, it also helps with their reading and writing skills. As a student is learning to recognize the letters, they should also be learning how to write them at the same time. Letter knowledge is supportive of reading skills because when they can recognize the sounds of the letters, it helps them identify how to sound out a word. In the English language, there are many complex words that may be spelled in a way that the letters will make different sounds. A student who had letter knowledge will be able to identify how the word is supposed to sound.

Having the alphabet up in your classroom is a good resource for the students. Having images of things that the students know on these letters for the students to reference is also helpful with their letter recognition.

Without phonics knowledge, it would be very difficult for students to further in their reading and writing skills.

Irregular words are words that cannot be read by using phonics to sound them out. In order for students to be able to learn to read these words, they need to learn how to read them by whole or automatically by sight. There are two different types of irregular words. There are permanently irregular words and temporarily irregular words. Permanently irregular words have one or more sounds that are not pronounced the conventional way. There are only a few permanently irregular words, most are temporarily irregular. Temporary irregular words are words that have unique sounds/spellings at first but as these sounds and spellings are taught, they are no longer irregular. When teaching these words, the teacher should start with just a few of these kinds of words. Start by teaching the ones that will commonly show up in future readings. These words should also not be introduced until regular CVC words are read regularly.

Many of the words in the English language have irregular sounds. Teaching our students to recognize these words and how to read them is crucial to their success in learning to read and write. These skills are not only important to students who are just learning to read and write for the first time, these skills are also important for ESL learners as well.

Multisyllabic words are words that have more than one syllable in them. These words tend to be more difficult for students to read than one syllable words. For students to learn how to read multisyllabic words, it is helpful for them to learn pattern recognition. Pattern recognition helps the students perceive the different syllables. When teaching students how to read multisyllabic words, syllabification is important for them to learn. Syllabification is the process of breaking down multisyllabic words into separate syllables. Syllables each contain one vowel sound. In each syllable there can be more than one vowel but it only represents one vowel sound. Syllabification is part of the decoding process of words. When teaching multisyllabic words to students, providing them with strategies for decoding these words because as they go through the school system, most of the words that they are going to encounter are going to be multisyllabic words. There are six different syllable types that can be shown to the students to use as strategies to learn how to decode multisyllabic words. There are closed, vowel combination, constant, open, vowel-constant, and controlled. Teaching these different types of vowels is a good tool to provide your students with so they can use them to recognize how to read these multisyllabic words.

As students get into the higher primary grades, they are going to be exposed to more and more multisyllabic words. As teachers, it is our job to facilitate them with the tools that they need in order to learn how to decode and read these words. Without the skills and tools to be able to read multisyllabic words, our students are going to be held back from being able to read. Multisyllabic words are everywhere, not just in school so it is important for our students to be able to read these types of words correctly.
