Acceptance

Even though things may not be the way we intend on having the be, we have to accept the circumstances.
This picture relates back to the story, because at the end of the book during Rex's final days of his life when he shared his life with Jeannette, she started to accept the fact that even though he wasn't the best dad he did truly love her and wanted to give her everything at best.
More towards the end of the story Rose Mary shares, "Your father is who he is," Mom said. "It's a little late in the game to try to reform him now. Humor the man."
The quote relates back to the picture and to the theme, because even though Jeannette had a grudge against her dad, her mom told her nothing was going to change and to hear them out and still visit them.

Theme: The idea of someone loving you so much that they will do any means necessary to protect and make sure you are ok.
This picture relates back to the the story, because early on in the book Rex wants to make sure his daughter is ok, so he questions the doctors on how they are caring for her which ended up leading to Rex carrying Jeannette out of the hospital.
In the beginning of the story Jeannette explains, 'Then dad got into an argument with the doctor. It started because Dad though I shouldn't be wearing bandages. "Burns need to breathe," he told the doctor.'
This quote relates back to the theme and to the picture, because in the quote Rex is just trying to protect his daughter as best as he can in an environment that he doesn't have much control in so he resides in questioning the doctors to make sure they are doing what is best for his daughter.

Theme: With the environment we are placed in growing up, sometimes we must' grow up faster then expected and find our identity sooner to prosper in life.
This picture relates to the story, because the first memory that Jeannette has in life is when she was cooking her own dinner while her parents were focused on themselves which led to a traumatic injury.
Recalling the earliest memory Jeannette shares, "But at that moment, I was wearing the dress to cook hot dogs, watching them swell and bob in the boiling water as the late-morning sunlight filtered in through the trailer's small kitchenette window."
This quote relates back to the theme and to the picture, because as early as three year olds Jeannette was born into an environment which she had to care for herself by cooking her own meal while her mother was focused on painting, which led to her catching on fire.

Theme: Not every promise can be held as more important things come first.
This picture relates back to the story, because Rex had many promises to the kids that he never actually fulfilled.
Jeannette states how the place of the supposed Glass Castle was slowly disappearing, "But he never got around to do that, either, and and as Brian and I watched, the hole for the Glass Castle's foundation slowly filled with garbage."
This quote relates back to the picture and to the theme, because even though Rex had promised to build the Glass Castle for his family he became more focused on other things in life like work and his need for alcohol which consumed his time for the idea of building the Glass Castle that he promised.

Theme: Even in unfortunate circumstances the idea of being able to move forward and adapt with the resources available.
This picture relates back to the story, because when going to school Jeannette was able to find comfort in journalism where she was able to get more involved in school.
Jeanette shares the importance of feeling belonged to a place like journalism meant to her, "I loved the newsroom's purposeful atmosphere."
This quote relates back to the theme and the picture, because even when Jeannette was going through terrible stuff at home she was able to make something in her school life purposeful where she belonged.

Theme: Growing up without boundaries leaves to outside the box non-rule breaking ideas that have no consequences.
The picture relates back to the story, because when the Walls' family was residing in the desert Brain and Jeannette would find themselves exploring since they had no rules.
Jeannette acknowledges the non-conformity by sharing, "One afternoon, while exploring the nearby dump, Brian and Jeannette mix together various hazardous waste liquids in an old shed and set it on fire."
This quote relates back to the theme and to the picture, because since they grew up in a non-conformity environment Brain and Jeannette were able to explore unsafe spaces.
