This is a great question Lauren. Elie's hardships with enduring injustice and inhumanity can be applied to recent events in history. Specifically with police brutality. African Americans are being persecuted and killed around the world because of racism and ignorance. Not only now but always in history African Americans have experienced injustice and have been treated less than human.

Excellent question Lauren. It allows students to have a deeper understanding of the the Holocaust by comparing it to an event that they may know more about or is more personal to them. As a future Social Studies teacher, this would be a great boo/question to pair with chapters on slavery or even the French or American revolution. The applications are many. It could also be a great opportunity to discuss more current events and an expose students to injustice in their own world. Good way for students to understand a new perspective. You could even ask students to compare to an injustice they have witnessed or experienced to make it even more personal. Depending on your class and if it wouldn't be too sensitive of a subject.

I think this is a great question and is super versatile! One way I would associate Elie's hardships would be to connect them with the Trail of Tears. I feel like this event isn't covered as much in school, even though it was a brutal occurrence. Many were killed and they were led through horrible conditions as they were forced out of their native land.
