The film brings up the idea of self hatred. We seen this in other films this semester. What makes some groups like Native peoples prone to this?

In an interview I watched about the film, some of the men described how when they came back from Vietnam they were seen as baby killers and lumped together with all of the horrible things that happened there. How is this related to Natives being lumped together in their representation in the films we have watched this semester?

I thought it was interesting how they had to essentially pretend the people they were killing were animals to feel "okay" about it.

One thing that really stuck with me about the film was the importance of community. They continually mention how important the people around them were. I also thought that the positive turning point in the film was when the veterans started talking about their experiences together and healing as a group.

They had to vilify the Vietnamese to justify killing them, just like how America had to view natives as one dimensional characters in film to justify killing them in the past. A lot of this film was disturbing to me

I think it was interesting how one of the veterans described how the white soldiers were often much more violent and acted in savage ways while in vietnam which is how the native americans were often stereotyped by the white people especially in earlier films
