Peer assessment activities among my pupils is very effective.
Assessing a peer's work helps the reviewer to learn by suggesting improvements and explaining why mistakes were made. Children can explain solutions at a level that is at times clearer than explanations offered by teachers. Also, students can be tougher on each other and more complimentary.

I have started to use peer assessment this year and I can say that it is very useful for better students' performances. It also boosts weaker students to do better. The success of peer assessment and consequently of self-assessment is the building and sharing of rubrics. Rubrics become a kind of guiding maps for students because they perfectly know what they are expected to do for an assigned task. So the learning process is actually in their hands and becomes more effective.

Spain
I think peer assessment is a very valuable tool. Students learn from each other. They are asked to give constructive feedback and that makes them reflect not only in the work that has been done but also on positive ways of addressing problems. Weaker students feel very motivated with peer assessment because they feel they are being helped, rather than graded. And stronger students also benefit because they are asked to reflect and explain. It is also a good opportunity to work on team building.

Everytime they do a presentation, I always ask their peers to offer comments, but they are reminded they should offer comments in a nice and encouraging way. I have a discussion with them and they seem to realise how important it is to be evaluated by their peers. Rubrics have helped me a great deal.

For example, after doing any written activity or listening, students should correct the answers of the person who is next to them. The student proposes his work in class and the peers have to comment it simply: they have a guide to express their comment. It is very useful in order to Become critical not only of other persons but also with themselves. In this way they understand how difficult is for a teacher to arrive to a right assessment about the students.

Every fish has unique name, shape and colour and all the students know them very well. So, my students are 7 - 10 years old, I teach them English and Nature Studies and every lesson is a kind of inquary, we work together, in groups as I help them every time. At the end of the lesson every student put himself a fish /mark/ in his notebook to self-assess his work and participation in the theme/ topic. Twice a month when we have practice and revision we all /students and I/ put colourful fishes /marks/ to the chart with the names of the students - to assesst the best, most active and motivated student of the month.
Sometimes I use a chart with stickers for some topics.

Peer and self assessment are not that obvious or easy to implement in class.
First of all I believe the classroom learning atmosphere must be relaxed and out of any judgmental condition, which happens any time during my lessons. As to teaching writing and language analysis tasks I always have some students read or produce something and then after the task is completed I ask "What worked properly?" and "What was missing?" so that a common mistake may be clarified and solved to every student and anybody in class may enjoy such a methodology. For recurrent mistakes (especially in written tests) I correct them as follows: I write the sentences or examples on the whitebioard and ask some students where the error actually is and to think over it before correction.
Students become quite critical when it's about progress but less critical when this affects their mark.
Second I ask some students to re-phrase the sentence with a mistake into something new and see whether correction has led to amelioration. I ask some students if the new sentence is correct and where the error was lying and which category it might fir in

This helps them increase strong bonds and develop skills having to do with citizensip and socialization and their critical thinking and decision making! At the same time they master what they are learning by sharing and take in all the information they think important in a collaborative way!

Peer assessment has it pros and cons, depending on the context it is applied to. For example, in this online course, it may vary to its extremes – either neutral and discouraging, or critical and meaningful. As for my classroom reality, it is often subjective, hence not so efficient, because students tend to be less critical to their friends, or rather stern with those who they don‘t like so much. Therefore, peer assessment does not always achieve the desired outcome, which is why it has to be alternated with the other assessment methods.

It has allowed me to perceive the impact of my work on others and the suggestions given by my peers have contributed to improving my work. Seeing and evaluating the work of others has also been important, as it has also given me clues to improve my work. I'm sorry that some revisions are not being ongood contribution .... But even this is important, because it alerts me to the importance of carrying out an assessment of my peers with responsibility. I will apply this type of assessment to my students. The videos that have been made available are a good help to know how to do it the best way!

I discovered Peer Assessment to be a very useful instrument to improve my teaching methods. It’s like when you ask a friend to give an opinion on your work. There is no competition. It is only a way to learn to do things differently and maybe getting to the same results through an easier path. In classroom I always let students work together, make them work in couples or in groups so that they can exchange their opinions, but above all they can support their mates using their own language and get to the final result better than I can do when I use my teaching methods.

— In order for peer assessment to be effective , a method of critiquing and delivering feedback must be established . Peer assessment involves more than a directive of read this and tell the creator what was good / bad . Assignment specific or more general activity specific feedback forms are a great way to achieve this . Having a tangible response to create is more likely to ensure a thorough review of the peer ’s work . Feedback forms can be created in a variety of ways. The formative feedback strategy of placing stars and steps in front of specific feedback pertaining to an assignment lets students see starred comments of elements done well and stepped comments sharing areas for improvement . Peer assessors could be asked to provide a predetermined amount of stars and steps or be allowed to place them as they see fit ( as long as both markings are utilized ) . Even younger students could easily complete the Star & Step strategy. This method can help students determine the areas of their work that need further attention and the elements that are done well .

They are asked to do projects at home and at school, and they are asked to share their findings with the other children but they are not capable of peer assessing.

However, I have done peer assessments in other specific periods of my life: in school, at work, and now for this course.

At school many times we would correct each other’s activities. We would exchange papers with the student next to us and then correct their paper and give them a grade

At work, every year we are asked to assess a colleague. We have a list where they ask questions about the person and then we must write an answer to the question and rate the persons skills in relation to the question in a scale from 1-5.

Finally, I have been doing peer assessment through the PBL course, since we have been receiving other colleagues work to review and give and opinion. I believe that grading doesn’t always have to be related to a specific grade (A: B: C: D etc.), I believe that giving and opinion is also an assessment as well as making the child think in a bigger plan so that they can find more complete answers.

I also believe that peer assessment is great way of exchanging ideas and obtaining answers and that is why I totally agree with this method of assessment.

I think that formative assessment is based on the importance of student self-assessment as activating students as owners of their own learning and peer assessment. In my class I have organized peer assessment activities with my students. The students prepared a kind of card that contained a series of standards and rubrics about the contents of the task they had to do. Afterwards they did the self assessment and they also gave feedback the peer assessment. The result of this type of assessment was very interesting because the students were very involved in the process of evaluating their classmates and this led them to ask questions and to reflect.

For instance my students have to read a book each term and make an oral presentation of it. All students have a paper in which they assess their peers and their own presentation. Sometimes they can see things that I haven't noticed and they are really true about the others' work. It is rewarding.

I have only used it to correct written expression, in order that students identify grammar, vocabulary or orthografic mistakes. I think this exercise benefits the person who assesses (if they are able to identify and correct a mistake, that means that they master what they should know), but, the way I apply it, it is not focused to provide such a rich feedback.

I think the ladder of feedback is very interesting and rich to the student being corrected, too. But I think it Works well when the peer assessment is done among peers having the same age. I guess my youngest students would repress their opinions, if they had to assess an older one (in my class there are students being 14 until 55 years old).

I have done some MOOCs which have been evaluated by peer assessment and I have to say that they were not very thoughtfull neither effective. My students are not used to this type of activity because the learning style in my school is very traditional unfortunally. Yet, I know that peer assessment is vey useful because it lets students reflect and also understand the difficulties of evaluting someone's work. It is a serious task indeed . Moreover peer evaluation has to be structured very carefully and the teacher has to be very professionally prepared in order to create and select the most appropriate and reliable criteria. I found the ladder of feedback useful and I am going to read more to understand it more deeply

The second one of course, because it helps me to improove my teaching. I think that I will use more P2P assesment in my class. There is nothing as important for them than the peer judgment: when I must evaluate them making them answering questions, they feel really worried about other students’ judgment and they often ask me not to let them answer in front of the classroom even if they know the answers. This means that peer-assessment is also a way to make them work at their best capabilities. For that reason it will be better if a project ends up involving the school community, the families with a demonstration such as a gallery of works, a recital and so on…

This will also help students to acquire communicative skills.

In my lessons I usually use both peer assessment and a self assessment. With several criteria in the Rubrics my students review their classmates activities, provide a feedback and can grade their peers. So they become very responsible and committed. The peer review in the PBL course is very inspirational and helpful.

It is a real inspiration as it has no relation to the rigid character of the traditional assessment. The participation in the peer assessment activity on the course proves to be quite useful and makes me feel 'richer' as a teacher. Peer assessment can be a precious tool for our work and I guess it can offer greatly to the students too as it takes critical thinking and responsibility to judge.

I used it to have an assessment of homeworks and for presentation or test where students have to show orally their knowledge. But I realize now that I was using it wrongly because at the end I asked them to give a grade or something that could be used as a grade. I'll change it, trying to use the ladder of feedback and using a simplified rubric for the evaluation.

I partecipated in a course about using drama in the classroom. At the end each partecipant had to write a positive comment on a sheet of paper attached ot the others' back. At the end we all read our sheet. I do this activity with children because I remember the nice feeling I got from it. This is , indeed a poor example.. but it's worth it with shy self conscious children.

PEER ASSESSMENTWhen children exchange their views on how they acted among themselves in activities, they clarify what they have to do, what are the responsibilities of each and every one. They learn to explain and argue, they better clarify sequences and phases of activities. They learn to argue and use a language that is capable of criticizing without arguing. If alone they can not solve a problem that blocks them, I know that I'm available to reflect and find words together to express their criticisms and their needs with their comrades so that they can be together and work with satisfaction and effectiveness.Emma

In math classes there are many peer assessment moments. Whenever students have to solve exercises, they usually solve them autonomously, but later, they should check with a colleague if the exercises are correct. In this practice, students are called on to help their classmates without solving their problems, but by asking them driving questions to make them realize what is wrong and correct them. In all classes, there are students who stand out for their ability to help colleagues, evaluating their work, without being incorrect and without providing the answers. In this field I am satisfied. Nevertheless, in more open projects (less used) this is not so observed.
Personally I have used “peer assessement” in almost all the work in which I participate. Almost all of my lesson plans are the result of collaborative work among my fellow teachers and in addition I have also worked directly with the direction of the school in this perspective. I have often done the role of "critical friend" in various documents and proposals that school management has developed, in clear peer assessment.
I really enjoy working this way because I am a person who is very open to criticism and I believe in collaborative work.

I use peer assessment when adopting PBL in the classroom. For example, students in small groups prepare a summary or a presentation about a specific topic in collaborative learning through 2.0 web apps. Then, they introduce their products to the rest of the class, who is invited to evaluate the oral presentation and the digital outcomes. Unfortunately, in Italy we must stick to a law which compels us to use numbers 1-10 to grade every activity and/or test, according to a strict evaluation grid. As a consequence, it is very hard to assess soft skills and quality unless you provide your pupils with precise rubrics.

It let them learn and teach on each other at the same time. Even, I really think that this kind of assessment power relationships.
I usually implement this technique in Rhythmic Gymnastics. Each pupil has to assess his partner five skills of every beam (rope, ball, hoop, club and ribbon). Consequently, his peer has to do the same. In this case, it´s a summative assessment.
Nevertheless, this technique can be used as a way of formative assessment too. For instance, we are working long jump in peers. I give them an image about a perfect long jump. In this way, one of them try to do it while his partner is correcting until improving his technique.

It's a great way to help students improve without the involvement of teachers. When teachers are involved students may think they are being tested and peer assesmeet removes this tension. For these reasons, I would intend to use it at any given opportunity during lessons. I think going through The Ladder of Feedback with the stude and guiding them to create their own early on in the PBL would help to create a positive environment.

I sometimes use it to get the feedback on students' writing or exercises done in class. What's more, I have noticed that sometimes students don't like that peers suggest changes in their work. But after watching a video I realized that I have to give guidlines for students how to do it by using Leader of Assessment, to do it politely and devote more time to this activity. I will use it when students are asked to do some written assignment, before handing it in to teacher.

I hadn’t heard about the ladder of feedback, but it’s actually a method I am currently trying to teach my students. For the most time students at my school tend to focus on the negative aspects and are rather “destructive” when providing feedback. They haven’t realized yet that collaborating is about helping each other and growing together. To them school is a competitive setting, possibly due to the fact that we adults, teachers and parents, haven’t been able to make it into something better. To at least give it a try and change the mindset, to me it is especially important that my students are thoughtful and helpful when giving feedback to their peers. I always insist that critique should help building something – not tearing it into pieces. We should be kind, sensitive and empathic. Tell your peers what they got wrong or could be improved but do not forget to be kind. And miss the opportunity to mention what you like about their work. To work on this aspect in my classroom I have put up tags with the names of my students on them. Classmates can stick positive messages to a nametag to show that they appreciate the work, help, etc. of that person.

I have the students gather criteria about the aspects that should be considered when the project is graded. We then create a rubric together. Each student has a copy of this rubric in his notebook as a reminder when the students are doing their work. Collaboration about the outcome is stressed because I make them feel that everyone can get super grades if they work together as a class helping each other. They should show what they are doing to other groups to get feed back. One student is picked by product owner to fill out and sign the rubric before that student brings the product to me to be graded. If we are of different opinions then we discuss the differences and give the grade together. This technique works better in Woodworking class than in Physics class.

The two videos I had the opportunity to watch are very effecting in providing ideas for peer assessment as well as highlighting the advantages and positive outcomes it provides. I totally agree that being assessed by a peer is less stressful and as you are talking to a peer it will be considered a helping hand rather than a critique. Doing peer assessments throughout the PBL activity will also dismistify it a bit and little by little it will be considered a natural and productive part of the process. I confess I haven’t done it in my classes as often as I should and I’ll try to do it in a more regular basis from now on. Great ideas to implement. I really liked it.

As part of our work, we teachers in Poland after 2 or 3 years (depending on our teaching level and experience) have to prepare Future Development Programme which ends with special examination in front of experts from Department of Education and School Governing Body. Now I am on my 2nd level and I'm working on to go to 3rd level. A part of that development program is to view other teacher's lessons (who teach this same subject or who are your supervisor) and after that "present" our own lesson to that person. You give each other feedback and you should improve your teaching in the future. In that way it is peer assessment used during development.
If talking about students, sometimes I allow them to give each other feedback. But I must be very careful with it, because students are over criticising each others work without giving proper feedback.
I think peer assessment is more useful for everyone because it gives benefits to everyone (someone mentioned that in a 2nd video). It also gives the idea how other people "read" final work in general.
In my work, when I have an origami workshop and students work on some model, they give each other advice how to read instruction and how to fold it. They used to complain that the (Japanese) books I give them are in Chinese and they can't understand. I told them it is just a matter of pictograms, not side comments to be effective in folding. Now they can work by themselves and prepare nice models while working in small groups.

As someone participating in peer assessment type activities like on this course, I really feel we learn much more about ourselves with others. It is so helpful to have someone ask us to clarify a certain statement or to make us think about other ways to apply PBL in our classroom. Then, with the suggestions our peers give us, we can reflect on our work and find ways to improve it. When reviewing others in our peer assessment activities it is firstly a great responsibilty. Our peers are expecting us to do the best they can. It is important to read attentively and to clarify any questions we may have. The videos and examples of the Ladder of Feedback have been very helpful. Then we can say what we liked most and comment on any concerns we may have. Then in order to help our peers the best we can, we must give clear suggestions on how, in our opinion, work can be improved. We feel progress both when assessing and being assessed. Since we have to be engaged and focused on positive feedback, there are many advantages!
