The camera helped because people would take pictures in certain places and see the ghost. Horace, the apprentice would take pictures of the girl's grave and the dead girl would pop up in these pictures. The camera played a huge role in solving this mystery.

Every time Horace would take a photo in the cemetary he would see the girl in that photo. Since the cemetary showed the girl, it helped him figure out what she is doing. He later finds out she is trying to harm the people who harmed her.

The book starts off as the apprentice, Horace talks to a ghostly figure who knocked on their door, at the time he didn't know it was a ghost. The next day the mother of a dead child asked if they can photograph her daughter's grave, and asked if they believe in ghosts. Horace is a rational person who does not believe in ghosts. Horace goes on to take photos of the girl's grave, and the girl shows up in the photo. Horace recognizes her face and realizes there is a ghost. They talk to the mother, and say they saw her and the mother warns them about her daughters motives, to abuse the ones who abused her. The mystery begins. They use all of these clues to figure out what the girl is doing. They find out the ghost won't do anything bad to them. Pegg, the slave girl tells her about how the girl would talk about dark things, and they then realized she was about to do bad things to others.
