However it is important specifically in TSoW because it comes hand in hand with what the islanders did on a daily basis, what a wife did (for her husband, children and wider community), the distribution of jobs in the workforce, and marriage. Shinji’s mother: Does all the housework such as cooking for the family, is a diver, wishes for a daughter who can help her out at home

Shinji - Doing fishing like most of the young men of the island 

Hatsue's father: Being the 'man of the island', controlling Hatsue's affairs and Hatsue in general, being the captain of a boat 

All of the men of the island are supposed to be strong and masculine. 

The women of the island are then seen as property and there are many scenes highlighting the physical appearances of both men and women

Gossip and rumour is a large part of the Uta-jima culture, stemming from lack of interesting materials to talk about. Yasuo - He played a part in spreading the rumours and he started the rumour that he would be the one to marry Hatsue 

Hiroshi - he is involuntarily involved in the gossip as one of his friends involves him, Hiroshi gets into a fight with a friend because the gossip was too rude and out of hand 

Shinji - got separated from Hatsue, was disdained by most of the villagers and young men of the island, was portrayed as promiscuous and improper for the rumours of what he did with Hatsue 

Shinji’s mother - Worried about Shinji after the rumours spread

Hatsue - got separated from Shinji because Uncle Teru found out, was the subject of the villagers tongues when she first arrived, lots of talk about her marriage 

Uncle Teru - he found out about his daughter’s love affairs through the mouths of random strangers from the bathhouse.
