The theme of gender roles is prominent in TSoW and almost all parts of the world during the time in which TSoW was set. However it is important specifically in TSoW because it comes hand in hand with what the islanders did on a daily basis, what a wife did (for her husband, children and wider community), the distribution of jobs in the workforce, and marriage. We see that almost everything is connected to gender, there is a clear line between men and women and the islanders are portrayed as puritans.

The theme of gossip and rumours is prominent in the novel as it consisted of what most of the islanders did on a daily basis. Gossip and rumour is a large part of the Uta-jima culture, stemming from lack of interesting materials to talk about. In TSoW, this theme is important as Shinji’s relationship with Hatsue was grounded in gossip and the rumours of the villagers is something that impacted their lives greatly.
