Lyric Analysis

Although a part of Future's image as a rapper, is his womanizing lifestyle, there was a time in his life when he shared a very public relationship with R&B singer, Ciara. In October of 2013, they made headlines with their engagement.

For nearly a year, the two artists had shared a life together, even birthing a son named, Future Zahir. However in 2014, in the very same year of their son's birth, they would split. The break-up was a painful process for both stars, as their most vulnerable moment would be exploited for the world to see.

Following that same year, Future would drop his fifth studio album, "Monster". The song "Codeine Crazy" was dedicated to the very public and painful break-up with his former fiance.

An excerpt from the song;

"You thought I forgot about us? I know that you know I don't fold under pressure- Im back on the road, I get low on the pedal- We live by the codes of the ghetto."

The lyric expresses themes of loyalty, resilience, and identity. Future's reminding someone- and himself- that he hasn't changed. He's stayed true to his upbringing and values, even the face of fame, betrayal and inner turmoil.

Influential Lyric

An excerpt from "Used to This":

"Be honest to yourself, don't you never pretend (tell 'em)
Don't ever play yourself, know when it all begins (you know)
I had put my back against the wall (and what?)
Tell me that I don't deserve to ball"

Through Future's lyrics, he communicates the freedom of self expression which hits home at the very core of hip-hop. The art form of rap itself has opened doors for artists to convey their own visions. Whether it be N.W.A. with their provocative message of oppressive resilience or Tyler the Creator's expressive and imaginative album rollouts, hip-hop has challenged rappers to explore what it means to an artist.

As a person who is passionate about art, I know how much power it is to have a creative license. My dream one day is to become an art director, free of limitations and free to be able to bring my vision to reality. Future encapsulates the full sense of artistic drive in these few lyrics.

Atlanta is the number one creative epicenter for not only hip-hop but music as a whole. It has housed artists from Andre 3000 to Young Thug, from Soulja Boy to CeeLo Green and from TLC to Future.

Starting with its roots in southern blues and jazz, Atlanta has been a sanctuary for African-American music and culture, allowing for a melting pot of sounds to blend and evolve with each other.

In 1991 the hip-hop collective, the Dungeon Family, emerged to create a network of Atlanta artists that would feed off each other's sound. The founder, Rico Wade, would become a synonymous figure of the Atlanta music scene, inspiring groups such as Outkast.

Being the cousin to Rico Wade, Future's family ties let his talents nurture under the mentorship of the Dungeon Family.

Future's sound can be described as drowned-out mumble-trap music, however he has ventured out to different genres that have expanded his taste in music. For example, his song with The Weeknd, titled "Double Fantasy", takes heavy inspiration from synth music of the 80s, working in unison with his deep electronic vocals.

Collaborations is nothing new to Future, working with artists that range from different genres. Whether it be, Taylor Swift's pop music vibes, Justin Bieber's R&B inspired album, or Drake's more melodic approach to the rap sound.

Fashion is the number one element in creating a self image for musicians, most synonymously in the hip-hop industry. Future is no rookie in embracing the stylish lifestyle, known for being a pioneer of skinny jeans, flexing designer brands such as Maison Margielas and Lanvins, and popularizing the use of women's jewelry.
