I love the line that Gandalf (from The Hobbit) says, "You don't really suppose, do you, that all your adventures and escapes were managed by mere luck, just for your sole benefit? You are a very fine person, Mr. Baggins, and I am very fond of you; but you are only quite a little fellow in a wide world after all!"
This always reminds me that it's not about me. The reason I teach is not for my own benefit, but to benefit my students, their families, and people in the future. I like to remind myself, too, that I'm just a small person in all of our world of education. I don't have to do it all, and I don't have to do it all by myself. I can trust others to help me and our students along the way.
"Thank goodness."

This is a great quote to live by. There is so much more to why I do things in my career than a paycheck or to be able to say I am a teacher. I do it for my kids their families, and the community. Each action causes a ripple that impacts those around us in significant ways. We might not even see the ways that it impacts them. My successes and my losses affect all those around me. Our team leader always says 'we either sail together, or we drown together.' There is simply no other way around it. I love that there are other teachers in my same boat that struggle through the same things that I do. It reminds me to take a deep breath and avoid negative ripples. I can impact the life of a student in many ways, I hope it is a positive one.

My connection to this text is thinking about my feeling of wonder when I see the stars. Due to light pollution, I often can't see just how many stars there are, but when I have a chance to be somewhere dark, I get this feeling of wonder. The universe is so big and we are such a small part of it. I connect this idea to my classroom. I may be one educator among a sea of many, but I still have the ability to make changes and be someone. The same is true for my students. Their future is bright and although there may be many of them, they can make a big change in the world.

I can make a personal connection to the last lines that you shared. This year has been overwhelming, to say the least, and at times it feels like I am in over my head. I am so fortunate to be surrounded by great friends and supportive colleagues are are willing to help in any ways they can. I want to help my students succeed, and I will - but it's comforting knowing I don't have to go about it on my own!

Such an important thing to remember, right? I have so many moments when I get all caught up in MY deadlines and MY needs, forgetting sometimes that it is really about them. They aren't in school so I could write curriculum and respond to parent emails. My job wouldn't exist at all if that's all it was. I have to always remind myself that my purpose if for them. Good quote, and a nice reminder!

Learning to work together is HUGE. We teach it every day to our children trying to instill teamwork and friendship and respect in their minds. But like anything, it is much easier to talk about than to put into practice. Personalities and values and pedagogies differ and sometimes it easier to go off on your own, but as I have recently learned; colleagues always have something to offer and going into meeting with an open mind and with having that idea in mind is important.

What a great quote! I think its an important reminder and something to live by. Life can get very stressful and you can feel overwhelmed. It is important to remember that there are others around you and others to go through it with you. In the school setting, we are all here for our students and want the best for our students.

I wouldn't be a good teacher if it wasn't for the support of my colleagues at school. I wouldn't be sane as a grad student without the support with my husband and co-workers!

Also, the line of the little fellow reminds me of how I felt when I was in Greece at the Acropolis. I felt so small and insignificant, but in a good way!

What stands out to me is this line: "...you are only quite a little fellow in a wide world after all." This is certainly true, but when it comes to teaching, we are so important to those students who are in our classroom. We are all "little fellows" compared to the large number of teachers in the state, country, world, but appear to be much much more to our students

When I am not with my students, I am with my colleagues working or planning.
