Review the CASEL competencies, then post at least two social/emotional skills you believe should be included in our essential skills framework for sixth grade. After you post, like or comment on other's posts to respond.

1. Self confidence- if students don't BELIEVE they can do it, they won't
2. Self management (to echo what O'brien said) impulse control is extremely crucial. Students are going to encounter a lot of unexpected events in school, as well as outside of school. Appropriate response is crucial to their resilience. I think this is especially important for students that face a lot of instability/inconsistency at home.

1. Self Management-managing emotions to achieve one's goals. It is extremely important that students develop these skills to be successful adults.
2.Social Awareness-Showing understanding and empathy for others. Unless students can develop this virtue we will never be able to change the society. They need to learn that they are their brother's keepers.

1. Self-management: 6th grade have a lot to learn in the middle school transition, and a lot of what they're learning is how to manage themselves. Coming from elementary schools where there was much more structure and a lot less freedom opens them to a potential of "culture shock"...not knowing how to respond to their new autonomies, and sometimes causing them to test the boundaries.

2. Responsible Decision-making: I believe this goes hand in hand with self-management. I would even argue that the two are cyclical: Self-management leads to responsible-decision making, and responsible decision-making leads to better self-management. Once students maximize their ability to manage themselves, they'll be better able to contribute to our local 6th grade society, and can further develop the other skills.

1. Self management: Because this is a key development to START in sixth grade and should grow throughout the rest of middle school

2. Relationship skills: A lot of our sixth graders barely know how to work by themselves let alone work with others. We should be integrating collaborative assignments weekly. Not just turn and talks, but using DEAL and problem-solving with classmates

I feel like self-awareness is a big one. I have noticed that a lot of students have difficulty with social situations, relationships, and even their academics because they are either not able to acknowledge their emotions or know the impact their emotions have on both their actions and other people. The growth mindset piece is also HUGE! I would love to incorporate something to encourage the growth mindset! I feel like changing our students' (and even our) mindsets could do amazing things for them.
