Building these dialogue skills not only strengthens mutual respect but also helps us bridge differences, which is essential for unity in diversity.

My Pros and Cons on Land-constrained cities like Singapore should prioritise underground infrastructure over vertical skyscrapers to address land scarcity and population growth.

Pros:

Although underground development is highly costs and longer project durations. Reports from the ITAA recognize these complexities, but case studies including Singapore’s DTSS, the Thomson-East Coast MRT Line, Jurong Rock Caverns, and demonstrate that such projects are feasible. In a city with limited land like Singapore, preserving surface area, improving sustainability, and preparing for future growth justify the investment in underground infrastructure

Constructing infrastructure below ground gave significant advantages in both climate resilience and sustainable growth. Singapore Underground Master Plan will feature pilot areas, with ideas including data centers. Success story from Helsinki, Finland, has showed underground data centers cooled naturally by the environment, reducing energy consumption. This approach supports sustainable urban growth, a model Singapore could emulate (researchgate, 2022)

Underground infrastructure allow urban areas to use their limited land more efficiently, such as utilities, transport systems, and commercial facilities can be located underground. This approach helps cities like Singapore free up valuable space for parks, housing, and community amenities, supporting both sustainability and livability. For instance, the large-scale project like the Deep Tunnel Sewerage System, freeing up land above for redevelopment

Cons

Concentrations of tall buildings and concrete absorb and radiate heat, raising urban temperatures, this is known as the urban heat island effect. Example: Studies show that areas with dense clusters of buildings are warmer than less dense housing estates (NUS, 2022)

Dear Future Citizen of Singapore,

Greetings from one fellow Singaporean to another!

Through this learning journey, I discovered that resilience is not just about bouncing back, but about growing stronger through challenges. From overcoming water scarcity to thriving without natural resources, Singapore shows us that bold innovation and unity can turn constraints into opportunities.

My advice to you is this: stay adaptable and open-minded. Life in Singapore will constantly evolve, and your ability to embrace change, listen to others, and grow from setbacks will help you thrive.

Lastly, let’s build a more inclusive nation together. Practice perspective-taking, whether in dialogue or decision-making. When we listen with empathy and act with respect—across cultures, beliefs, and backgrounds—we create a Singapore where everyone belongs.

With hope and solidarity,
A fellow contributor to our shared future
