I am interested in Hamlet’s visible changes, both mentally and physically. His internal thoughts begin to surface and the readers get more and more “sightings” of his struggle with himself. I don’t know if Hamlet is actually “crazy,” but he is definitely struggling which surfaces when he impulsively grabbed the gun and shot Polonius. I can’t tell if he is doing this out of grief, anger, or simply confusion. But he definitely is coming at all of this the wrong way.

1. Will Hamlet’s murder of Polonius ultimately ruin Ophelia’s love for him?
2. Who should Hamlet be most afraid of: Claudius, the Ghost, or himself?

1. I feel like Hamlet has a love/hate relationship with his mother. It could truly be love in the idea that he wants to be the one to have Gertrude instead of Claudius. Yet he hates her because of her “incestious” acts after the old King Hamlet’s death with King Claudius.
2. Why does Hamlet try to go around the idea of revenge on his uncle?
3. Did Hamlet focus on his mother’s incestious acts before Claudius?

1.) I am fascinated by Hamlet's mental health/state of mind. He has become obsessed with the idea of flesh which is a little creepy. He wants something physical and that provides reason to why he acts the way he does to his mother and also his sexually charged relationship with Ophelia. Not only is he obsessed with the idea of flesh, but also his mother. I find that also very odd. Hamlet is mourning his father. He is angry about his mother's relationship with Claudius. He is becoming overwhelmed with all these different emotions and he begins to act kind of odd like his obsessions.

2.) Will Hamlet have a happy ending? Will he fix his problems in his life or make them worse?
Will his relationships repair? Will him and Ophelia live happily ever after? Will he fix things with his mother?

I think that Hamlet is becoming obsessed with his mother due to the fact that he has no one else to look up to. He wants nothing to do with Claudius so he has no choice but to “idolize” his mother. Growing up without a father figure can be detrimental to young men as they have no one they can model after. Is a mother’s guidence enough for a young man to learn how to be a man? How is a mother’s guidance different from that of a father figure?

He is now overly concerned with his mother and uncle: the relationship, the lack of mourning for this father, and his uncle's actions. I don't think Hamlet is mourning too much--everyone deals with tragedy different. How can you determine the appropriate length of mourning and how said person go about that? What is it about Hamlet's personality that makes him obsessive over things?

1. I am interested in the fact that Hamlet goes mad after Claudius becomes king. His state of mind is not fully there as it should be as it starts to deteriorate. Hamlet going mad could be his way of dealing with his father being murdered and his mother marrying his uncle who somehow took the throne instead of Hamlet as that is how it would normally work in a royal bloodline. His mourning could be a sign of taking it too far or that he is no longer okay.
2. Does Hamlet go mad to get attention and to make Claudius even more upset with him? Was Hamlets mind seen as “normal” or “okay” before his father passed away? Is Hamlet just being over dramatic about everything that has happened?

Now, however, he has developed lots of immoral tendancies as well as becoming much more daring. He lashes out at his mother and step father more and isn't afraid of risks.

I am wondering what is causing him to become like this so fast, is it welling up inside or is something provoking him?
Does he think he can do anything, assuming nobody "cares" about hom at this particular time?

Hamlet focusing on his mom seems relatively normal, he wouldn't talk to his new stepdad about her transgressions. But, his physical focus on her having sex is strange to me. A parent's sexuality seems like a universal taboo subject. Although he is pretending to be mad that way Claudius doesn't figure out what Hamlet knows, he seems actually insane talking to his mother. I didn't understand how Gertrude could have been afraid of him because it's her own son, but the visual is powerful an showed how rough and aggressive he was.
I see the sexual tension between the mother and son, but I'm not sure if it was meant to come about. The Opedius idea is a bit of a stretch, to think that Hamlet wants his mother to himself is a little extreme. I think he's more furious with his mother than anything.
Does Gertrude understand Hamlet's grievance with her decision to marry so quickly?
Is Hamlet's madness a mirror of what he is really feeling, or is it all for show

He is constantly changing emotional states, however, I think this is truly to cover his plan and decieve everyone else. It’s interesting because nobody can’t see through these emotions so his plan is working.
2) Why does Hamlet go to such lengths with his emotions ultimately ending the relationships he shares with others? Does Hamlet feel bad about hurting his friends or is he so caught up and blinded by his plans that everyone else became expendable?

I feel that Hamlet is trying to avoid the situation of getting total revenge. He’s too upset to go forward with what the ghost wants. Everyone thinks he’s crazy because of his actions but it’s because he’s on two ends of the table, he is involved with the ghost and reality (his family, friends etc). This could be why he’s acting insane because nobody will take him seriously.
Questions: Is the ghost an allusion? Was Hamlet not mentally sound before the death of his father? Is his mother mad at him? Why couldn’t his mom see the ghost? Did he want to kill his uncle but accidentally kill Polonious? Have his parents always had issues? What’s going on between him and his mother?

Claudius is aware of Hamlet's obsession with Ophelia. He recognizes that this love must be so strong that it trumps everything else around him as he admits he would do anything for her. Claudius is guilty and senses that Hamlet knows. So, he uses Ophelia as a pawn. However, what if she didn't really love him? What if Claudius knew from the beginning that once he killed the King, Hamlet would have suspicions. Therefore, Claudius set up Ophelia, knowing it would distract him from revealing the truth behind the murder. Maybe it was played out from the beginning and eventually Ophelia fell in love.

1.) I do not believe Hanlet to be mourning excessively in any way. The people around him seem to be the narcissistic ones too caught up in their own happiness and life to stop and grieve for the life that has past. It’s hard for me to tell whether Hamlet’s “madness” is actually him losing his sanity or if he is just deteriorating from being around the insane people he encounters on an everyday basis. It is also hard to gauge Hamlet and Gertrude’s relationship for they technically should both be in times of mourning which causes people to act and behave in more loving ways than they usually would.
2.) Why isn’t Gertrude able to see the ghost? Is Ophelia jealous in a way over Gertrude and the relationship Hamlet and her have? Did Claudius always have this plan to kill his brother out of jealousy or did soemthing spark it?

I believe his actual depression, not the act he uses as a mask, is justified because he experienced the loss of his father. However, the depression revealed to Gertrude and Claudius is not all truthful. He over exaggerates his emotions to distract the authoritative figures from his revenge scheme.
2.)

I wonder in Hamlet's display of madness which of his actions are his true feelings and which ones are to confuse those around him, because the play itself is filled with doubt and question. For example, maybe Hamlet is not truly attracted to his mother, but because he feels like he needs to take his father's place as the rightful king of Denmark, he is maybe lost in the idea that he and Gertrude are king and queen and therefore married.
We see Hamlet call himself "The Dane" at Ophelia's funeral. He's not calling himself a citizen but in this case a king, hence "the" which is one entity and "Dane", which is capitalized for importance. What exactly he is implying, whether he needs to become the king soon, or rather he is implying that the position of king isn't as glamorous as it seems, I'm not sure. Probably the latter.

1) For whose sake does Hamlet want to assume the title of King?
2)Does Hamlet have a true desire for Gertrude or Ophelia, and is this true love or a source of comfort in this dilemma?
