Insight from Failure – Carol Dweck

Quote (Source: Carol Dweck, Mindset: The New Psychology of Success):

“In the growth mindset, failure is an opportunity to grow.”

Personal Connection:

I used to think failing a test meant I wasn’t smart enough. But once I learned to ask for help and put in consistent effort, my grades improved—and so did my confidence. Dweck’s idea helped me realize that failure isn’t a wall, it’s a door. That mindset helped me turn a math class I once dreaded into one of my biggest academic successes.

Quote (Source: Michael Jordan, Nike “Failure” Commercial):

“I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”

Personal Connection:

This quote hits home for me because I’ve had moments where I gave something my all and still came up short. In high school, I fractured my ankle and didn’t get to play the rest of the football season my junior year. It crushed me—but I worked on myself and focused on My criminal justice career as a law enforcement officer. That experience taught me that showing up after failing is its own kind of victory, and it helped me build resilience, just like Jordan describes.

Owning the Struggle

Quote (Source: Brené Brown, Rising Strong):

“Our wholeness—even our wholeheartedness—actually depends on the integration of all our experiences, including the falls.”

Personal Connection:

There was a time I pretended everything was okay when I was struggling emotionally after a big disappointment. Reading Brown’s words helped me realize that hiding my failures didn’t make them disappear. Once I allowed myself to feel the discomfort and learn from it, I felt more real—and more powerful. Failure made me stronger, not broken.
