“Challenging all school staff to change the way in which they have traditionally worked across all school settings.”

I chose this idea because I feel like a lot of the time teachers are not willing to embrace change. Either it’s too much effort on their behalf or they feel as if they are seen as incompetent for needing to learn. I believe it’s a necessity to accept change, as it allows you to discover new ways of teaching your students. As we learn about the importance of Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy, challenging school staff to change the way they traditionally work is important. I also chose it because I feel I struggle with change sometimes so it’s going to be very useful for my development as a teacher.

Jassmin: Districts and teachers and faculty on site need to have open communication as far as support and distribution of resources. Teachers’ suggestions should be taken into consideration when districts are proposing additional support and resources because they are the ones who are with the students every day, learning what their needs are.

Jessica: The students with disabilities cannot thrive without the entire system working together. They need to agree on one goal in order for the student to be successful. Without all levels of an institution being in agreement on the common goal of serving students with a variety of needs, a quality education cannot be ensured.

Raquel: Without new ways of teaching, the students are going to remain behind as they have in the past years. Professional development is very useful as it allows teachers to see a new way of thinking. Even new technology has made education more accessible for a lot of students, those who might not be able to leave their house. MTSS focuses on aligning initiatives and resources within an educational organization to address the needs of all students. It is a method of organization.

Tonja: Many times students with behavior and/or academic learning issues and disabilities, and even gifted and high achieving students can get lost in the education system. If students get lost in the system they don’t get the support that they need and deserve. Since MTSS is a multi-tired system with a broader scope it intervenes before a student gets lost in the system. Thankfully, it’s a system that uses supports and resources that encompasses ALL students, so that parents teachers and educators can feel confident that students will get the support they need in order to learn, grow, and thrive.
