A agitated writer Jack Torrance takes a job as a caretaker for a hotel with a messed up past. A few years before he had taken the job the last caretaker killed his family. He killed his family due to "cabin fever",when you're isolated for too long with the same people. Danny the son of Wendy and Jack, has a special talent called "The shining". He can communicate with others through their heads using this talent. Throughout the story multiple strange things happen, such as two twins continually appearing next to Danny.  You also see Jack turning slowly mad. One day when he is writing his novel Wendy comes down to visit him and Danny walks in with scars around his neck as if someone had been choking him. Wendy grabs Danny and runs away screaming at Jack assuming he did it. A few days later cabin fever has gotten way into Jack's head and he finally crossed the line of crazy. Wendy heard Jack screaming and ran into the room to see him on the floor. He tells her about this terrible nightmare he had where he was killing Danny and Wendy. Jack attends a ball and goes straight to the bar. While at this ball a waiter spills a drink on him, the waiter takes him to the bathroom to clean him up. While in the bathroom Jack accuses the waiter of being the caretaker who killed his family a few years back, the waiter responds telling Jack that he was the one who killed his family. Jack denies and heads back to his room.
