They did this in order to relieve pressure on the Soviet Union and gain a foothold on the European continent. In the wake of the attack, President FDR signed Executive Order 9066 in February 1942, authorizing the forced relocation and internment of approximately 120,000 people of Japanese descent. These camps were surrounded by barbed wire and guard towers and forced Japanese people to endure harsh living conditions. This was established due to America seeing these people as a threat due to Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor and the establishment of war, even though most of these people were Japanese-American.</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Iwo Jima is a small volcanic island located  halfway between the Mariana Islands and Japan and was important due to its airfields, which could be used by Allied forces for bombing raids on the Japanese home islands. Battle for Iwo Jima began on February 19, 1945, when U.S. Marines landed on the island's beaches under heavy enemy fire and American victory on February 23. 6800 American marines died and almost all of Japanese defending garrison had died. </p><br>

Gerd von Rundstedt aimed to split the Allied forces and force the Western Allies to negotiate a peace treaty but faces resistance by US, Great Britian, and Canadian units. Hundreds of thousands of soldiers were either killed, wounded, or captured in this conflict. Quickened the end of the war in Europe as Germany lost the battle. </p>]]></description>
