As I look ahead in my journey as a student nurse, I plan to integrate Standard 1.3 from the Culturally Responsive Clinical Practice framework into my practice: ''Demonstrate the knowledge and skills required to provide culturally safe nursing care.'' In the future, when working with Afghani refugees or people, I will prioritize understanding the psycho-sociocultural factors that influence their health. I will consider their cultural and religious beliefs, as well as the social determinants impacting their wellbeing such as past trauma, displacement, and the adaptation to life in Australia. I aim to provide care that is not only clinically effective but also culturally safe and respectful.

Culturally Responsive Clinical Practice: Working With People from Migrant and Refugee Backgrounds (2021).

Social Inclusion and Non-Discrimination for Afghan Refugees

Social inclusion and non-discrimination are vital WHO social determinants of health, influencing the well being of Afghan refugees in Australia. These determinants foster a sense of belonging and equality, which is essential for mental and physical health. When Afghan refugees experience social inclusion, they are more likely to access healthcare, engage in community life, and experience reduced stress and anxiety. Conversely, discrimination can lead to social isolation, worsening mental health outcomes and increasing vulnerability to chronic diseases ( World Health Organisation, 2023).

By fostering a welcoming environment that respects Afghan's cultural practices, healthcare providers can offer a culturally safe care, promoting better health outcomes for Afghan refugees.

Reference:

World Health Organisation.
Mental Health Challenges Among Afghan refugees

Upon arrival in Australia refugees often face significant mental health challenges, including PTSD, depression, and anxiety. These issues stem from the trauma war, displacement, and the challenges of resettlement. According to the Australian Refugee Health Practice Guide, PTSD is particularly prevalent due to prolonged exposure to violence and loss. (Australian refugee health practice guide 2023).

One effective treatment option is Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TF-CBT), which has been shown to reduce PTSD symptoms by helping individuals process trauma in a safe and structured environment. This therapy is culturally adaptable, allowing Afghan refugees to explore their experiences while respecting their cultural values and beliefs.

Reference:

Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care.

Afghan's hospitality, or Mehman Nawazi , is deeply embedded in Afghan's culture, where guests are are revered and offered the best provisions, reflecting the cultural ethos of Pashtunwali- a code emphasizing honor, hospitality and generosity. This practice is not just social etiquette but a psycho-sociocultural framework that underscores the importance of communal support in Afghan society.

Healthcare professionals should understand Mehman Nawazi to provide culturally safe care to Afghanis.

In Afghanistan, traditional sports like Buzkashi and Kokpar are more than games-they are vital cultural expressions. Buzkashi, a horseback game where players compete to seize a goat carcass, showcases Afghan values of bravery and skill ( Wright, 2019). Kokpar, similar in spirit, reflects the communal ties and rugged terrain of the region (Feldman, (2021). These sports are not just entertainment; they embody historical traditions and social norms.

Understanding these activities offers insights into Afghan's psycho-sociocultural models of health and community, emphasizing resilience and cohesion.

Afghani carpets are renowned for their intricate designs and rich symbolism, reflecting the diverse cultural heritage of Afghanistan. Each carpet tells a story through its patterns, often representing tribal affiliations, historical events, or natural elements. These handcrafted pieces, along with other traditional handicrafts like pottery and embroidery, are not just art but vital cultural expressions that support local economies and preserve age-old traditions (Ranjbar, 2019). In Australia, Afghan migrant's cultural practices including their handicrafts offer valuable insights into their identity and well-being. Recognizing and respecting these cultural elements is crucial for providing effective and culturally safe nursing care, aligning with national multicultural health priorities.

References:

Ranjbar, S.
