They both took part in an essay competition where the main winner will receive the Holmes- Watkins Medal.  Lynne wrote about a sheepdog while Geoff wrote about a runaway elephant. Eventually, Geoff was announced as the winner. Lynne was a bit disappointed. However, her disappointment turned into anger when she discovered Geoff has cheated by plagiarizing William Bradburie's work.  She accidentally blurted out "William Bradburie" in Geoff's presence and his jovial facial expression changed abruptly to dismay.
Later on, both of them were called to see Mr. Velos, the school principal. Geoff was disqualifed and Lynne was now the winner.
